Christmas Songs - My ears are bleeding

I have not heard "Christmas Eve in Washington" or the "Christmas Shoes" song ONCE yet (although I'm sure they've been played). Last year I had to stop listening to 97.1 altogether because EVERY TIME I turned it on, one of those two songs was on, and I got tired of vomiting all over my dashboard.

Those are the worst. Christmas. songs. ever.

My husband loves "Christmas Eve in Washington." It is horrible. I havent heard "Christmas Shoes" once. I listen to Christmas music nonstop (when 97.1 flips). I love Paul McCartney's "Simply having a wonderful Christmastime." Last Christmas is a terrible song. Couldnt imagine back in the 80s it would go on to become a staple. However, I do enjoy Glee's version of the song. Taylor Swift's is terrible. I figure some songs are bad but I suffere through them. Havent heard any of Gloria Estefan's song yet. Some of her terrible classics: "Christmas through your eyes," "This Christmas."
That Mariah Carey song...I like it but does it have to be played SO much. On the other hand...I never get tired of hearing Whitney Houston's "Do You hear what I hear?" or any Christmas song Vanessa Williams sings.

In addition, "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney has to be the WORST song ever. I know there are better Christmas songs out there, why are we subjected to these two songs over and over again??????

I am so with you. I hate both these songs. I love Paul McCartney, but I sort of think there is a special place in hell reserved for him just for subjecting the world to this awful song every year.

Christmas Eve in Washington is my least favorite. By far.

Switch to 90.9. Classical christmas music, including brass, chorals and the monster Christmas works like the Bach oratorio or Handel's Messiah. It makes for a nice break from George Michael, Mariah Carey and those horrible shoes which I also hate with a passion. Usually that is when I switch the station

Also, the Africa song about "do they know it's Christmas time at all?" is horribly depressing. I really listened to the lyrics for the first time about a year ago and felt horrible afterwards.

Isn't Christmas supposed to be a happy time? What gives with all the doom and gloom in the songs?!?!?

Christians believe that Christmas is a mixture of happy and sad, as Jesus' birth foreshadows his death and resurrection. So actually, Christmas songs can be either joyous or sad. But yeah, I do agree the Band Aid "Do they know it's Christmas?" song is kinda depressing.

I've been a Christian my whole life and have never felt sad or heard anyone else say they felt sad about Jesus birth (and foreshadowing death). I've only heard of it as being joyous.

Then you obviously don't listen to much classical music. The Messiah tells the story of Christ: predictions of his life, his birth, his agony and death, resurrection, and the second coming, when all those who do not follow him burn in torment while his righteous followers rejoice. Dark stuff.

I am a christian, too, and I certainly celebrate the season as a joyous time, but the historical roots of Christianity include a lot of darkness. If there weren't evil in the world, what would good triumph over. That's why so many carols have such a melancholy air to them.

More importantly, the Band Aid song is terrible because it is so sanctimonious. Yeah, thise starving people in a war-torn nation that is largely not christian are only sad because they don't know that it's christmas. The important thing is to be generous one day every year so that we can share the christmas spirit, not to, say, work towards universal peace and prosperity all our lives. Just on Christmas.

Listening to Mariah Carey's "All I want for Xmas" right now.

Only "modern" converted song I like as well.

I like Last Christmas, but I tend to like all christmas music done by 80s icons.

How can you NOT love Madonna's "Santa Baby"? Or Bon Jovi's Christmas songs? And my absolute, all time favorite Christmas song by the Boss "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" (although Merry Christmas, Baby is a VERY close second)?

Hell, I even still own the NKOTB Christmas album...ON TAPE!

I love Christmas music, and listen to 97.1, XM 4, XM 13, and XM 17 almost nonstop from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve.

BUT: The Christmas Shoes drives me nuts. I'm actually afraid to type it in or even think those words because I'm terrified it will get stuck in my head. It is the most sappy, god-awful, self-congraulatory, cheesy song ever written. It makes me mad just thinking about it.

I like Last Christmas, but there have been two or three remakes in the last couple of years, so it was pretty much all I heard the weekend after Thanksgiving. I'm done with it for this year.

I used to hate Paul McCartney's Simply Having A Wonderful Christmastime for its inanity, but now I appreciate in an ironic way the dated synth and echo.

My favorite Christmas Song is The Waitresses Christmas Rapping. I even like the Spice Girls' version. This song seems to be making a comeback in the last couple of years. Used to be I wouldn't hear it unless I dug out a tape myself, but I've heard it a couple of times this year, even once or twice when shopping in ordinary places like Home Depot or Macy's.

I own this in mp3 LOVE!

At one point (before a computer crapped out on me) I had a christmas song list made up of all 80s christmas music. I might need to do this list again this year.

The Christmas Shoes song is awful. AWFUL.

But I have to say I like most of the rest, even the Paul McCartney song. It's bad, but it's so bad it's good.

The other day in the car the BandAid song came on, and my husband changed the station. When I protested, he said, but it's so depressing. And yeah, it is. And yeah, it's not really a Christmas song. But I can't help but still pick out all the 80s acts I loved so much back in the day, and mentally play the video.

+1!!!!! I love blasting 90.9 Christmas music while stuck in traffic. I feel like I'm in my own little aural bubble.

97.1 plays it all day long this time of year

So turn the radio down or off when these two painful-to-you songs come on? Is that so hard? Or is your radio encased in a locked plexiglass case to keep you from adjusting the dials?

That's one of my favorites.
And I can't help but think we've been pouring money into various parts of Africa for decades and they're still crap. It's about time we stop. I don't care if that makes me sound anti-Christmas, we have bigger fish to fry right here. It's got to end somewhere.

OMG. Of course you can change the channel (and we are talking about music in stores, btw) but it is just a fun topic PP.

Get the candy cane out of your keister.
