pp, the nickname has developed naturally and I need to know how to spell it.

p.s. I'm guessing your name is something like Bertha. bye.

WTH does my name (not bertha, i can assure you) have to do with what i think of the name evelyn? Also, your post was not at all clear that you already had a daugther named evelyn ("if you were to name your child", not "my daughter's name is"). In that case, I like Evy for a short version. With a name like that (Evy, Evie) you will inevitably run into people who will mispronounce when they only see it written. Such is life.

I don't understand how you could think eve-ee is a more appropriate nickname for Ev-lin. You're talking about pronunciation but then recommending I use a nickname that doesn't sound like the full name at all.

Nicknames do not have to sound like the full name. While Rob is one nickname for Robert, so is Bob. Alex may be common for Alexander, but so is Sandy. As is Peg for Margaret. Ted for Edward, Babs for Barbara and so on.

For the record, I've known several Evelyn's. One went by Lynn. The rest went by Evelyn or Evie (pronounced EE-vee). While (EH-vee) is cute and understandable, I'm another (different from PP) who has never actually heard that in real life. I would probably try to spell it Evy or Evi (like Evian water?) to try and encourage people to pronounce it right, but most people will just assume it's an alternate spelling of EE-vee.

I have heard "Eve-ee".
I have also heard "Eh-vah", spelled Eva

I love the name Evelyn. I also love the name Vivian.

EH-vee is the only nickname I'm familiar with. (And the women I know who go by that are in their 50s, so no, not a new "Bethesda" one.)

That said, you could go in so many different ways. Evie, Eve, Lyn, Leelee, etc. Just choose your favorite!

Does make me think of this person, though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evie_%28singer%29

My DD's name is Evelyn and we call her Evy and sometimes Ev.

Cute little girl down the street goes by Evy. Not sure how they spell it. It's adorable.

Lyn is a cute nickname. Stephen Colbert's wife is an Evelyn who has gone by Eh-vie for her whole life. This is my daughter's name but I don't like Eh-vie because it sounds too much like "heavy". I worried what she would be called if she had a weight problem.

Our daughter goes by Evelyn or Evie (pronounced EH vee)

My cousin's daughter Evelyn is called "Evie" (pronounced like heavy with no h). Same for a second cousin.

Evelyn Waugh's first wife was Evelyn Gardner. They were known as Hevelyn & Shevelyn!

Evelyn Waugh's first wife was Evelyn Gardner. They were known as He-Evelyn & She-Evelyn!

The Evelyn I know goes by Eva. Love either version.

My DD is named Evie, which we pronounce "eh-vee." It's his grandmother's name. And I think it is a great nickname for Evelyn.
