+1. Most view this as the shakedown that it is and not any kind of mea culpa. |
| It’s a smart deal. Not a shakedown |
Ok sure. |
The above statement is incorrect. The US Government awards a substantial amount of money to universities, including Cornell University, for research and development; the least that Cornell & other recipient universities can do is to comply with federal laws. This is a reasonable and excellent deal for Cornell University in all respects especially from a financial perspective. |
Ok. Sure. Great deal.😜 |
|
So disappointing. Kotlikoff sucks.
|
Don't be a jerk. Consider the consequences for Cornell University if it refused to make a deal with the federal government. Jobs would be lost, PhD programs would be shut-down, grad students would lose funding, and valuable research would be curtailed and/or lost. Entire depts at Cornell might have to close down or merge. |
https://abcnews.go.com/US/cornell-university-agrees-pay-60m-deal-trump-administration/story?id=127306289 "Similar to the other university leaders, Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff maintained that it had not done any wrongdoing or broken federal civil rights laws." They paid $30M to get $250M unlocked and did not agree that they did anything wrong. Seems like a shakedown to me. These funds pay people's salaries. This Trump administration doesn't care about people's jobs or even if they starve, if they are on the opposite political side. That is completely evident from the news. Plus Trump loves "deals". So obvious that these are concessions extracted under duress. |
Nothing jerky about it. I think the circumstances and incentives surrounding this "great deal"for Cornell are pretty clear. |
+2 This is Trump extorting universities like some kind of mob boss. Why are Republicans allowing him to do this? |
They think it's fun to watch. And the ones who went to elite schools are anti-DEI. Even the ones who might have benefitted from it. It's basically just a sophisticated version of "owning the libs". The ones who didn't go to elite schools don't care. Rationally, they know that talented people come from many schools and this isn't affecting their constituents much. Plus why would they expend political capital to try to take victories away from the Trump administration? I did see some R complaints related to one Southern flagship. The base doesn't care much about higher education. Remember that Trump loves rhe uneducated. |
Sounds like a reasonable explanation. I don't know that I would call it sophisticated. It seems like a blatant threat environment for higher education right now. |
| Carry a flash light too and stay on sideways Im shocked by how many people are just walking in the street with no light or reflective gear on. Walk in safe areas if you're walking for exercise in the dark. |
|
Pretty shtty of them to announce this AFTER the ED deadline...
|
Federal Law meaning "root out so-called unlawful DEI practices". And for a "research and development" the most important thing is a lack of diversity - we all know if everyone thinks alike there will be breakthrough. |
