Are these kids drinking and using drugs? |
None of the kids at our public school are going with adults. They are going to college in the Fall and most of them are 18 - had no problem getting an airbnb in rehobeth. We've had significant talks about consequences for being an idiot, drinking and especially driving. |
No. It’s done in NJ as well, private and public. Kid’s rent houses via parents and then no chaperoning. |
All of the groups I know going from area privates have chaperones. So it must depend on private vs public and from school to school. Houses typically won’t rent to under 25. |
MoCo and DC Catholic school grads I know are in Corolla this week. Some houses have a couple of parent chaperones and/or parents staying nearby. Some don’t. My kid has parent chaperones on-site as required by the rental agreement on the house. There are also parents nearby. Kid thinks houses from his school that don’t have parents on-site will be the first ones evicted for rowdy behavior. |
My son is currently in OBX for beach week with 7 friends. A couple of the parents rented a place nearly for only a SOS - if they need it, which is inconvenient financially but there wasn't any room at their rental. This particular group of boys don't drink (or drink excessively) or use drugs so we were ok with them being alone in the house. I'll be glad to be home and have beach week behind us!!! |
not happening under my watch. I'm nearby the beach house but am not buying them alcohol and am checking in A LOT. And they know I can stop by at any time to check in. |
Some housing in OBX, etc require parent who rented to the house to be physically present. Some of them even check mid week with unannounced visits to make sure someone over the age of 25 is staying at the house. |
No chaperones when William and Mary did beach week at Nag's Head years ago. Seems like most students are still unchaperoned there. |
It doesn't have to happen Op. |
Our school is there this week. I know the details of 4 houses and they all have parent chaperones in the house. What I usually hear is 2 at a time with a mid-week switch off. |
Our chaperones aren't buying alcohol, either. There is a lot of misinformation that is spread on here. Talk to parents from your own school. |
Yes but it varies from group to group. |
I grew up in NJ in the 1990s and we went down the shore after prom. No adults. I had two very distinct groups of friends and stuck with the nerdy crew rather than the partiers so it was incredibly tame. Saved my wildness until I got to college! |
2 kids at the same private (‘21 and ‘23 grads) went to OBX with parents (2 at a time, switching mid-week) as chaperones. The ‘23 year had kids kicked out of houses at the beginning of the week. A big financial loss for those parents. A little parental involvement is a reasonable idea when you are renting a home/condo/hotel. I have friends who have paid thousands in damages. That doesn’t happen much in college, but seemingly not uncommon at Beach Week when kids unsupervised. Yes- I think they are still kids. |
