White House suspended financial aid programs

We wouldn't qualify for aid, but my job will probably disappear soon with no grant funding.

Of course I will look for another job but with all the uncertainty, seriously considering telling DD '25 that they need to choose an in-state university.

The EO says the programs put on hold should not impact assistance provided directly to individuals. So I don't see how it could impact financial aid.

But yes I agree the whole thing is illegal and ridiculous. However it seems to be aimed more at institutional funding and broader programs and to be designed specifically not to impact individual entitlement programs.

There is a war on the poor. Expect Federal FA to be snatched away soon.

I think it should be ignored and if the government wants to sue to make it happen, let them. I dont know why we're on the defense on this one.

The federal payment management system is already down so grantees can’t submit invoices to get paid. We are on the defense, unfortunately, and this will require legal action (or enough public pressure) to release the funds.

Federal aid goes to schools and then schools disperse it. I don’t think it’s entirely clear.

yall, we are in the "burn it all down" phase. I do feel for anyone currently in college or a parent of one. I hope you have enough to cover the difference. I "think" that spring semester has been paid by now I hope for you

Per the news article in the OP link:
They are being told they must report back by Feb. 10 on all programs that apply.

"In the interim, to the extent permissible under applicable law, Federal agencies must temporarily pause all activity related to obligation or disbursement of all federal financial assistance and other relevant agency activities that may be implicated by the executive orders, including, but not limited to financial assistance for foreign aid, non-governmental organizations, DEI, woke gender ideology, and the green new deal," Vaeth wrote.

I haven't looked any deeper than this article, but as Pell and federal student loans are statutory entitlements, and not disbursing would not be permissible under applicable law, there is no reason to be freaking out about this at this point in time. The news article does not reference Pell or federal student loans.

This. The language is vague. That’s intentional.

Except that withholding funds this way IS NOT PERMISSIBLE UNDER FEDERAL LAW. The Impoundments Control Act says that the president cannot refuse to spend funds appropriated by Congress. None of this is legal. So the idea that the language above changes anything or means anything is ridiculous.

The way I read the quote above, the direction is only if permissible by law. So, unless and until they actually do so, I think this is much ado about nothing. We will have to wait and see.

Are you kidding? It’s an illegal order that at best sows confusion and delays critical funding. What exactly are you waiting for?

People, please. Call your senators and representatives. Their power is being stripped. They need to care about this.

Look this is how this person operates- it is intentional to sow confusion. They are gleeful when people get upset. However, the government is called a bureaucracy for a reason. Before any funding is distributed, there are steps that must be taken to ensure it is legal. To the various agencies will need to go through their steps to comply with making sure funding is not allowed to be used for x,y, or z, per the new requirements. So may be as simple as adding language in terms and conditions of award that says the grantee cannot use the funds for x, etc. Don’t be reactionary and fall into their efforts to create chaos. Lean into the requirements for funding.
