You people are freaking out over nothing.

Sorry, no. Trump’s incompetency started all of this. This is not how an administration should run things. It’s irresponsible and negligent.

I hope he pulls back after the public’s outcry.

So he’s doing things within the law and you don’t think that’s how an administration should run?

What illegal methods are you proposing?

No, he’s not doing things “within the law”. Congress controls the spending.

The EO states “ to the extent permissible under applicable law,”

What’s left? Unauthorized spending.

Certainly you don’t mind stopping unapproved spending …

The headlines are not sensational enough. Those of you who live in states with senators and representatives need to call them now. This is impoundment, and it’s illegal. This is an actual five-alarm fire, and they need to act like it.

Agreed. This impacts so many vital and behind the scenes services for Americans.

Ok the mommy track remote work staycation non profit grant work is drying up. Time to get another job.

How pray tell do you think STEM research gets done at colleges and universities?

The funding for my kid’s PhD project is now frozen. Fun times. Kid is freaking out.

I'm distressed that your child's funding is frozen. That is not OK. But why are you lashing out at nonprofit work?

I think the quotes got messed up. I’m the PP about my kid’s funding. I wasn’t the one lashing out at non-profits. I totally support giving grants to non-profits. Sorry for the confusion. Have had lots of problems with the quote feature lately.

Oh that's terrible about the PHD project. I see a lot of bad news in here for stem students.

I think my college junior's summer internship might have gotten blown up. I would tell him to just do it unpaid. But, it's at a research institute so who even knows what's going to be going on in the entire institution.

This is very concerning. What does this do to undergrads that were are considering research careers?

I'm so sorry.

No it’s not. I just paid UM tuition today and my kid has been in classes for weeks. It’s due on 1/31.

The President doesn't have a line item veto over the budget. This won't get past judicial review.

He might want this issue taken to the Supreme Court so he can gain even more control.

But yes I agree the whole thing is illegal and ridiculous. However it seems to be aimed more at institutional funding and broader programs and to be designed specifically not to impact individual entitlement programs.

I just found out about a student who had to leave school because the loan is not coming.

OP

I call BS. Other schools (specifically an email from Hollins) have confirmed that student aid will not be impacted for spring semester.

Okay. Maybe the student lied.

They lost funding and are no longer in school. Someone in academia told me kids lose loans at times so maybe they would have lost it anyway.

I’m not naming the school. Too small.

Student financial aid via FAFSA is NOT affected by this EO.

“According to the most recent OMB guidance, the directive to pause federal funding will not apply to student financial aid, including federal student loans and Pell Grants. If you are a student, you should continue to register for and attend classes unimpeded.

The directive does require a pause on a subset of federally funded research activities implicated in an evolving set of executive orders or through stop work orders or other guidance issued by federal agencies. If you are a member of our research community, you should expect to receive additional direction later this afternoon if you have not already.”

Ugh, sorry for the garbled mess at the beginning!

Should read “FWIW, this is taken directly from…”

It was clearer than Trump’s memo. No worries.

+1 The WH is full of jokers who don’t know wtf they are doing. They’re about as prepared and professional as an all caps truth social post. Trump and his clown car of idiots.

Interesting you can come to such a conclusion in just a few days' time. I'm not a Trumper but know members of his legal team. iMHO they have done an amazing job since Nov lining up
these EOs. They are an impressive lot, both individually and working as a team.

Most of the Executive Orders are just silly. And the ones that aren't silly are poorly written and confusing, and often illegal or unconstitutional.

No, not impressive.

The action seems like a way to try and control universities, and I figured this would happen with him at some point.

NYT:

The Federal Funding Pause Does Not Apply to Student Loans and Pell Grants

Students and parents panicked after news of the order, but the Education Department said the guidance would not stop the flow of money to students and schools.

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/28/business/trump-federal-freeze-grants-student-loans.html

I thought they were next on the chopping block (re: Trump promises.)

They’ve said federal aid programs and FAFSA management would move to the Treasury Dept, which is where it was before the Ed Dept was founded.

Just trying to understand - how would that help? you just moved head count/funding to another department.

I didn’t say it would help. I was just responding to the pp who said the Ed Dept was next on the chopping block. That doesn’t mean FAFSA and Pell, etc, are on the chopping block. Those programs will just move.

However. Many other programs that Ed Dept runs, as well as many people, would be cut. That’s where the funding cuts are. More importantly, they want to remove federal oversight and push all that to the state or local level.

Move where? Who is going to be left to administer these programs once DOGE roots out the deep staters? Maybe ICE can be redeployed to disbursing student loans once they’ve thrown out all the illegals, but not sure most of them are fully literate so that might be a problem.

LOL did you see the one where your crack team of geniuses invoked “Title 2” of the United States Constitution? Maybe if you are citing to the Constitution as the basis for illegally firing DOJ attorneys, you might want to properly cite to “Article” II. It’s like they haven’t ever laid eyes on the Constitution . . . oh wait.
