White House suspended financial aid programs

Will this threat from the White House change your approach on which schools you'll apply to or attend?

The action seems like a way to try and control universities, and I figured this would happen with him at some point.

It looks like this doesn’t apply to individual stuff like federal subsidized loans and Pell grants?
The “green new deal” stuff is the craziest. I wouldn’t even know what that might encompass!

I didn't see anything that specified that this would not apply to federal subsidized loans and Pell grants. In fact, the article suggests that it would include those programs.

"In the interim, to the extent permissible under applicable law, Federal agencies must temporarily pause all activity related to obligation or disbursement of all federal financial assistance and other relevant agency activities that may be implicated by the executive orders, including, but not limited to financial assistance for foreign aid, non-governmental organizations, DEI, woke gender ideology, and the green new deal," Vaeth wrote."

Who knows what they will define as DEI and "woke gender" ideology.

Pell grants are technically issued to colleges so it's possible.

It's bad, but they've also stopped AIDS treatments that are currently on the ground in Africa. They literally want to throw them away instead of just giving them to people and saving lives.

So .. here we are.

besides being immoral, it's illegal.

congress controls spending. if it's been approved by congress, it's been approved. any memo from the White House should be ignored. just as if Nancy Pelosi nominated someone to the cabinet, that would be ignored.

this is fundamental to how our government works.

And "merit" would mean "don't be woke" and "don't be transgender" and "don't be anything covered under DEI"?

That's what I think it would mean...

President Musk really hates transgender folks and is mad he has a trans kid.

Well they hate education and this is one way to cause universities to collapse.

The media doesn't help with these sensational headlines. Schumer spoke out against it and did point out it was not legal. But now, lawyers will have to be hired to proven it is not legal -- maybe.

If this happens, we will eventually be out of jobs.

it's completely illegal.

I think it should be ignored and if the government wants to sue to make it happen, let them. I dont know why we're on the defense on this one.

I don't think people understand the extent here, if this isn't stopped, the damage will be incalculable. Farm subsidies? Rural hospitals? Any kind of infrastructure projects. I could go on.

Interpreting by adopting the worldview that informs the memo, I fear an end to financial aid at universities in blue states, via the 'no DEI/woke/green' clause, but not in 'anti-woke' red states.

The headlines are not sensational enough. Those of you who live in states with senators and representatives need to call them now. This is impoundment, and it’s illegal. This is an actual five-alarm fire, and they need to act like it.

Of course it's not. But president has immunity and congress doesn't care.
