Yoga moaners

Wait…I’ve been out of yoga a bit but you actually expect people to do poses that actually support expelling gas and ask them to get up and step out of the room to…expel gas? Good lord are you bougie. Should people step out and step in front of a fan so they don’t commit a sin of sweating?

Yoga teacher here. The heavy breathers and moaners seem to be a mixed bag. Some seem to be performing. And some are really and truly doing what they think they should be doing in a yoga class. It’s awkward at times, for sure! But just try to pay attention to what’s happening on your mat as much as possible and tune them out.

I don't think generic yoga classes teach this for the very reason that it is obnoxious to those around you.

Yes! Loud exhalers are just attention seekers and bring distraction to the class.

And yes, turn off your phone.

And don't come late to class. Any class, not just yoga.

Also, for men: Wear underwear under your shorts. Please.

For the most part - you should be breathing normally. Once you stop breathing to hold a pose it gets tiring. If you are breathing loudly then you are pushing yourself too hard. This isn't no-pain no-gain. This is do-it at your body's pace and the results will come. The guys that do it gracefully did it a for a long time. Its like trying to bench 300lbs because you saw everyone else do it on your first day.

Why aren't you doing yoga at home?

You are being a bit ableist here. Those living in larger bodies may not be able to "be breathing normally" in all positions. Even though they are certainly doing at their "body's pace" as much as possible.

No.
In many styles of yoga you are supposed to breathe audibly and are coached to do Ujjayi breath, as others have mentioned.

It's not moaning but that varies by instructor too, I've had a couple encouraging moans. Most encourage deep sighs and exhales at the beginning or end. Some places encourage doing your own pose and dance moves or "whatever your body is calling for". Most don't but it's interesting if someone takes them up on it.

As long as you're wearing underwear I am fine with the moaning.

I wonder why people aren't as interested in yoga classes as they were in the past. Does it have to do with the teachers, the yoga spaces, the costs, demographic changes.

I know of a few yoga studios and retreats, but the in person experience has changed.
