Fire the people who are still in their probationary period and who would be entitled to minimal or no severance, I would guess. Of course, in this environment, if they were hired, they are also probably in jobs where they are really needed. But, I’m 50 and have been a Fed for 20 years. Fire me and you owe me 52 weeks severance. |
Also no merit systems protections. They’re probably floating this proposal because they realize Schedule F will get bogged down in litigation before anyone can be fired under it. |
It's less than 52 weeks severance for only 20 years service. |
You get additional $$ for every 3 months above 40 years old though |
I have blackballed VERA people. Senior management had no idea how bad they were when they worked here, then they finally retired and wanted to come back. Noooo! Them being brought back was also going to block us from hiring someone new. Some retirees I’m desperate to have return, however. |
Wait what? I’ve fired people and I don’t think they got any severance. You mean laid off? |
|
Wow, a whole year of severance? That's amazing.
Ideally, they'd do true performance-based layoffs where needed, rather than blanket approaches or encouraging older workers to retire early. But they won't be doing anything reasonable. |
You get an extra week for every three month over the age of 40. |
Yes. RIFs that are not due to work poor performance. It’s 1 week a year, plus one week for every three months over the age of 40. |
That’s not correct. From OPM: Age Adjustment Allowance The basic severance pay allowance is augmented by an age adjustment allowance consisting of 2.5 percent of the basic severance pay allowance for each full 3 months of age over 40 years. 52 weeks is the maximum severance a Fed can receive in their lifetime. Perhaps that’s where PP got confused. https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/pay-administration/fact-sheets/severance-pay/ |
| Do probationary periods reset by position or are they once-per-person. My boss is talking about promoting me into a new role and I’m wondering if that means this DOGE idea would apply to me and I should turn it down. |
So wouldn't it be 50 weeks then...see information copied from above site below: Basic severance pay allowance The basic severance pay allowance consists of- One week of pay at the rate of basic pay for the position held by the employee at the time of separation for each full year of creditable service through 10 years; Two weeks of pay at the rate of basic pay for the position held by the employee at the time of separation for each full year of creditable service beyond 10 years; and Twenty-five percent of the otherwise applicable amount for each full 3 months of creditable service beyond the final full year. Age Adjustment Allowance The basic severance pay allowance is augmented by an age adjustment allowance consisting of 2.5 percent of the basic severance pay allowance for each full 3 months of age over 40 years. I am 44 and have 20 years so for the first 10 years of my service it would be 10 weeks, and for the second 10 years of my service it would be 2*10 weeks=20 weeks, and 2.5 percent of 52 weeks of pay is 1.3 weeks of pay and with 4 years over 40, that will be 16*1.3=20.8. Total severance is 20+10+20.8=50.8 weeks. |
| As someone who just trained new people, it'd just be a massive, stupid waste. We hired people because we needed rhem, we just spent a whole lot of money training them and to fire them now would mean we aren't going to get the investment back. Might as well just set money on fire. |
Only if you’re becoming SES. |
Exactly - its firing the quiet quitters that would drain the swamp, not the newbies |
