So...cut the cheapest employees who are most motivated to do good work?
Fire the people who are still in their probationary period and who would be entitled to minimal or no severance, I would guess. Of course, in this environment, if they were hired, they are also probably in jobs where they are really needed. But, I’m 50 and have been a Fed for 20 years. Fire me and you owe me 52 weeks severance.
It's less than 52 weeks severance for only 20 years service.
You get an extra week for every three month over the age of 40.
That’s not correct. From OPM: Age Adjustment Allowance The basic severance pay allowance is augmented by an age adjustment allowance consisting of 2.5 percent of the basic severance pay allowance for each full 3 months of age over 40 years. 52 weeks is the maximum severance a Fed can receive in their lifetime. Perhaps that’s where PP got confused. https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/pay-administration/fact-sheets/severance-pay/
So wouldn't it be 50 weeks then...see information copied from above site below: Basic severance pay allowance The basic severance pay allowance consists of- One week of pay at the rate of basic pay for the position held by the employee at the time of separation for each full year of creditable service through 10 years; Two weeks of pay at the rate of basic pay for the position held by the employee at the time of separation for each full year of creditable service beyond 10 years; and Twenty-five percent of the otherwise applicable amount for each full 3 months of creditable service beyond the final full year. Age Adjustment Allowance The basic severance pay allowance is augmented by an age adjustment allowance consisting of 2.5 percent of the basic severance pay allowance for each full 3 months of age over 40 years. I am 44 and have 20 years so for the first 10 years of my service it would be 10 weeks, and for the second 10 years of my service it would be 2*10 weeks=20 weeks, and 2.5 percent of 52 weeks of pay is 1.3 weeks of pay and with 4 years over 40, that will be 16*1.3=20.8. Total severance is 20+10+20.8=50.8 weeks.
