Student apprehended with loaded gun at Gaithersburg High

We need more whistleblowers like the Clarksburg substitute . The general public would be shocked to see what it really looks like in a secondary school.

… how would you characterize their current behavior?

This is why we should have gun control laws which could be applied in ALL spaces currently at risk: k-12 schools, college campuses, grocery stores, places of worship, indoor concerts, outdoor concerts, indoor shopping malls, dance clubs, bars, outdoor shopping malls, movie theaters, …..

Yep, laws need to change to help fix this. Possession of a gun on a school campus....30 years. If it's a minor....20 years for the minor....20 years for the parent/guardian. End this nonsense and let students go to school without having to worry about being shot.

I don't understand this argument. We have cops securing concert halls, airports, and government buildings. No one is complaining about having cops in these places and saying that their presence make these places like prisons.

What are you talking about people complain about airports all the time. They’ve created whole programs where people pay to avoid parts of security and have shorter lines. So much so that depending where you are those lines might not even be shorter. I went to both a museum and concert hall recently. Minimal security at both. Now when there is a major event sure security will be increased but they are deemed targets everyday. Government office buildings have a badge swipe/show policy and metal detectors. What they don’t have is a bell going off every 45mins and 2000 people moving around 20 ways including in and out of the building.

Absolutely. She's brave and she's a hero. I wish more educators were willing to speak out like her.

MCPS doesn't listen to parents, but when teachers go to the media, as they did with Beidleman and the Washington Post, they can bring MCPS to its knees.

This isn’t something mcps can do. What can mcps do to fix this?

Even more reason why there should be police (SROs) in the building like those other establishments. I was at BWI and Dallas love field airports a couple weeks ago and in the security lines at both, we had to walk 2 at a time passing police with a bomb sniffing dog. I would not call that minimal.

I no longer believe in any specific number of years for a prison sentence. Why u
is 5 years better than 10 years? Why 20 years? The only reasons for prison are rehabilitation and removal for public safety. Punishment as a deterrent doesn’t seem to have much value. Therefore, exit criteria from prison should be based on whether the person is rehabilitated to effectively rejoin society. The person should demonstrate true understanding and remorse for their crime and possess a legitimate and executable plan with milestones that will be validated to ensure its success. If the milestone validations fail and make the plan impossible to correct, the person returns to prison. If the person cannot demonstrate that they have been rehabilitated or it is clear that they are a continued danger to society, their prison sentence has no end.

My school had a recent gun scare and all classes had to shelter in place until the police arrived. Apparently, students claimed their classmate had a visible gun in their bag. They told their teacher at the start of class. The teacher had to notify the office, who had to call administrators, who then called the police. Luckily, the student turned out to not have a gun. However, that child, his teacher, and his classmates were locked in the classroom for about 20 minutes. That’s how long it took for police to arrive on scene. If we had an SRO, he would’ve been at the classroom in minutes to handle the situation.

This.

Exactly! That would help, but bringing more guns into schools makes them less safe.
