Paramount 18s got waitlisted for CHRVA regionals. Columbia 18s came in first for CHRVA regionals. I had the same question about the Paramount 18s waitlist as the Columbia younger age group waitlists... More headscratching.
Again as PPs stated, CHRVA regionals are an easier path to get to USAV national championships but unless you finish first to get the 'national' division level bid, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place teams get American or Freedom level bids. Paramount 18s getting waitlisted for CHRVA regionals is a similar question to the Columbia younger age groups getting waitlisted even though they appear (to the publicly available information) that they met all the minimum requirements. To even get waitlisted, you had to meet the CHRVA minimum requirements. Bids are important if you are trying to get to USAV Nationals. It doesn't do anything to your club otherwise if you don't get a bid - clubs would use it for recruiting purposes but so few teams get bids, it is not the make or break. Blue Ridge and Delaware United opted not to go to USAV nationals (they did not ever apply to go to regionals depending on age group I didn't check all the age groups - you can see it in AES). They are going to some national qualifier tournaments (NEQ) but in at least one prior year, I know one of the age groups, Blue Ridge got a bid at NEQ to go to USAV nationals but didn't take it. The discussion about 'open' for this thread was originally brought up to see if they had met the minimum CHRVA requirements of playing at least one 'CHRVA sanctioned' tournament at the open division level. This was not a debate of 'level' at Cap Classic. Cap Classic open level would have met the CHRVA requirements for eligibility and consideration to go to CHRVA regionals. |
You are right, they were waitlisted. So 18s only need 1 CHRVA sanctioned event to be eligible for bid regionals? I think the other age groups need 2, correct? Do you think Paramount overestimated how good the 18s were this year? They travelled a lot to qualifiers but doesn’t seem they did great. I’m guessing their intention was to give their players more visibility but do coaches even visit the courts if it’s not the gold bracket? |
For folks who are more knowledgeable on the 18s age group, how does Paramount's 2024 schedule compare to 18s teams at other CHRVA clubs? It looks like they played (and won?) two CHRVA events on the first weekends of January and February. They also competed in three qualifiers (Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia) and Triple Crown. Is that a significantly high number of qualifiers through mid-March even though the club season is shorter?
It looks like the CHRVA Regionals landed on the weekend between the Southeast and Northeast Qualifiers. Paramount was the only CHRVA team at Southeast and only one of three at Northeast (with Metro and VA Elite). Had they not been waitlisted for CHRVA Regionals, tournaments on back-to-back-to-back weekends seems like a rather heavy load for any team. |
Here is some tournament registration info for DC based teams from in AES only. Other tournaments may have registration in SportWrench.
Also, it’s possible that clubs dropped some tournaments, but whatever is here is registration that the different clubs submitted registration for through AES. I think the 3 clubs that consistently play in the Open level at National Qualifiers are Metro Travel, Paramount, and VA Elite. That is consistent across all age groups, including 18s. In prior years, some of the Paramount age groups would play in the USA division at some qualifiers. Other CHRVA clubs are testing the waters in Open - both MDJRs and VA Juniors 17s played in Open at NEQ last weekend. Metro 18 Travel played in a MDJRs 18 Open tournament on 1/6 and they played at Cap Hill in 18 Open so they met the requirements for Bid Regionals but ended up not needing to go because they earned an open bid. I don't know why Paramount was waitlisted. It might be as simple as they consider when a team registered in deciding who gets to play based on the qualified teams and the other teams registered earlier. As to whether Paramount 18s schedule was particularly heavy, I think that is mostly a function of the qualifiers (and Nationals) being earlier for 18s. In comparison, Metro 18 Travel played in the Windy City Qualifier, the Florida Fest Qualifier, the Ohio Valley Qualifier, the Capitol Hill Classic, and NEQ already, and will play in the Music City Qualifier and Under Armour National Championship, ahead of USAV 18 Nationals in Baltimore at the end of April. |
I feel like this discussion goes over my head. Do you earn a bid by going to enough CHRVA sanctioned events? Or you just earn the right to participate in the CHRVA bid regionals? Do you earn a bid if you participate in the CHRVA bid regionals, or you have to win the competition? |
There are two ways to earn a bid. The first is to earn one by placing highly at a national qualifier. Here is the list of qualifiers for teams 17 and younger https://usavolleyball.org/events/?state=&type=77&country=&team=&zip=&start-date=&end-date=. The numbers of bids at a particular qualifier will depend on how many teams are in the division. https://usavolleyball.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/2024-Championship-Manual-Girls-FINAL.pdf The second is to earn one by placing well at the CHRVA Bid Regionals tournament which is next Saturday, March 23 (expect for 18s which was a few weeks ago). The winner of regionals gets a National division bid, second place gets an American division bid, and third place gets a Freedom division bid. CHRVA is often given additional bids to allocate later in the spring and uses the results from the Bid Regional tournament to determine what team will receive those bids. Also, if a team that earns a bid at regionals, later earns a higher division bid at a qualifier, then that team would go to Nationals in the higher division and their CHRVA bid would be reallocated according to the results from bid regionals. The discussion about having to play in at least 2 CHRVA tournaments (at least one of which must be an Open level) is only related to which teams are potentially eligible to play in the Bid Regional tournament. Because there are limited numbers of teams that can play in the tournament, CHRVA uses AES rankings and their discretion to decide which eligible teams get invited to Bid Regionals. https://cdn1.sportngin.com/attachments/document/1d1a-2794789/2024_CHRVA_Junior_Girls_Bid_Tournament.pdf?_gl=1*5e7q0i*_ga*Mjc4Njg3MDcyLjE3MDcxNzExNjM.*_ga_PQ25JN9PJ8*MTcxMDU1OTAwOS4zLjEuMTcxMDU1OTE0NC4wLjAuMA..#_ga=2.22572984.240428874.1710559009-278687072.1707171163 |
In this case, I understand the frustration with Columbia being waitlisted, while a team with AES ranking of 1500 is accepted in the CHRVA Bid Regionals. Shouldn't they have some transparent selection criteria? |
Here is the status and the ranking for U13 teams. There are so many questionable decisions here: Delaware Juniors 13 Ace, American 13-1, Columbia 13 Red, EPAN 13U:

Any surprises with CHRVA regionals today? |
Nothing too crazy. It was probably a bit of an upset for Metro to beat Paramount at 15s. I think generally the Paramount 15s are stronger. Similarly, I think the Metro 13s have struggled with MDJRs 13 Elite Black so that was probably a minor upset. Metro Travel teams had a good day overall winning gold and getting a National bid at 13s, 15s, 16s, and 17s and getting 2nd and an American bid at 14s. Paramount also had a good day winning first and getting National bids at 11s and 14s. Overall, Paramount had a team in the top 4 spots of every age group. I believe that means that after today they have a team with at least some kind of bid at 11s, 12s, 14s, 15s, 16s, and 17s. As of right now Paramount does not have a bid in 13s although with their 4th place finish they might still get a bid depending on how the reallocations go. It's seeming more and more unlikely that Paramount 18s will get a bid to USAV nationals. They were waitlisted for CHRVA regionals a few weeks ago and haven't earned an Open bid at a qualifier yet. They are playing at the Music City Qualifier in New Orleans this weekend and missed the top half on Friday so they are out of contention for a bid. I suppose they could still hope for an at-large bid. VA Elite did ok in their first regionals in a long time. The VAE 17s came in second and earned an American bid. They beat Paramount in the semis which is a bit of an upset, especially since since one of VAE 17s top outside hitters is out with a sprained ankle. The VAE 16s came in 6th and could potentially get a reallocated bid depending on how things play out with CHRVA getting additional bids. |
MVSA also did well. The earned a bids in 13-16 and could earn reallocation bid in 11s and 12s. After Metro and Paramount, I think it was the club with the most bids. |
Mdjrs left with 1 bid (13s), they probably can pick up 1 or 2 more through reallocation. |
Paramount and Metro 15s do NOT have a bid to nationals open division. They haven’t placed high enough in open division in the qualifiers so far. Metro won regionals so right now their bid is national NOT open. Good lord there is someone that keeps erroneously commenting about paramount and metro. At Sunshine they both were in the lowest division of open in the finals. Cap classic isn’t a great tournament anymore… this topic has been exhausted on another thread so please look that up to get the history. Paramount was smart to go to triple crown instead, I hope other teams do the same since cap classic is basically the metro show. |
Agreed Capitol Hill isn't the most competitive tournament, but I don't know that it ever really was. It's true that Triple Crown has really grown the past few years to attract the most competitive teams from all over the country that weekend but there were always lots of other tournaments that clubs would go to on Presidents Day. Also, for a team to go to Triple Crown they have to be invited (https://www.tcvolleyballnit.com/event-details.html#:~:text=2024%20INVITATION-,PROTOCOLS,-POWER%20POOL%20SHOW) and at least this year, the only two CHRVA clubs that were invited are Metro and Paramount. So other CHRVA clubs (or even the non-CHRVA clubs that come to Cap Hill most years) are not suddenly start going to Triple Crown simply because they're not invited. Also, with all the complaining on these forums about the cost of club volleyball adding a non-qualifier that requires travel to Kansas City and 3 nights of hotel stays seems likely to not be well received. The reality is that CHRVA is not one of the stronger regions nationally right now, but I do believe it is improving as the popularity of volleyball continues to grow. CHRVA is stronger than other regions in the Mid Atlantic and Northeast (Old Dominion, Keystone, Garden Empire, Western Empire, New England, etc), but still not even close to some of the regions in Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, and parts of the Midwest. I'm pretty sure that the only CHRVA team with an Open bid to GJNC right now is Metro 18 Travel. There is another month or so of qualifiers so there may be a few more Open bids earned, but earning an Open bid is difficult even for the very top teams in the country. Obviously you have to play your best volleyball at the right times, but you also need to get a little lucky in terms of seeding, where you come up against other teams in pool and bracket play, and what teams already have bids at a given qualifier. Even if they are not getting bids, it's been great to see more CHRVA teams playing Open at qualifiers - playing better teams nationally is going to help these teams improve. Also there is no shame at all in going to compete at GJNC in a division other than Open. There is plenty of good volleyball played in other divisions and competing at a big tournament like that is a great experience. |
