Pissed at UVA

Anonymous
Did the friends have much higher stats? I would imagine they do. The person from NJ probably has better scores than the rest of them. Very sorry for your daughter though. She and you did not have realistic expectations. That makes it even harder.

You paid an app fee? You're an idiot. Third week in October was free application to every school in the commonwealth.

OP is an embarrassment of a parent. No knowledge about the process at all. At least try to do some research...

Ahh, doubling down. Have fun with that on a board filled with people that used that free week to their advantage.

But..... six of her friends got in EA and only two are going. So, 4 spots just pissed into the wind at her HS. And she has to sit it all out.

It just sucks. I can't help but be irate that some kid from Jersey can go there but my daughter can't

The measly $1000 I donated every year will cease.

OK, OP, I get it but realistically

1) UVA no longer as of last summer has a legacy box. you can, however, talk in a supplemental essay about why your UVA legacy matters to your student.
2) So your $1000 amounts don't count. And in the real scheme of things little financial amounts don't count. I'm an Ivy grad but could never give six to seven digits counts for admissions. Our legacy DS kid got waitlisted at Legacy Ivies, and regular ivies, etc. That might have turned out different if we had given big donations but we could not afford to do so. Get realistic about the $1000 contributions.
3) a 1350 SAT is too low for UVA. Schev reports the 75th percentile (which is what you should be shooting for if from NOVA or DMV) to be a 1510 for 75th percentile of last year's class. https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp
4) the gpa is way too low but I assume that may be private and unweighted. Nevertheless, the 75th percentile of students at UVA reported having a 4.51 last year (4.38 at the median) and 4.20 for the bottom 25th of the class).

This is what you are up against if applying to UVA

I do hope you talked extensively with your high school counselor before putting in this application.

Not a shock to me.

Kid was 1550 SAT, 3.98 uw (4.5 wgtd), job, year-round athlete for 4 years, dual enrollment with all As in the college courses. Flat out rejected. Not a legacy. But he was out of state. I don't know if you're in VA or not, but I'm assuming you are.

+1.. OP, you are way out of line. Legacy doesn't count anymore, especially for small donations. Your child's GPA and test scores were too low. Didn't your high school counselor tell you this? and show you SCHEV, NAVIANce or SCIOR?

You are obviously upset OP, and unable to look at this objectively .

Sorry for the disappointment, but try to help your daughter believe she will have good options and wind up somewhere where she will thrive.

That spirit would serve her well.

OP I hear you.

My DD’s best friend got in. Similar GPAs, test scores. The only substantial difference is that DD took the rigorous HL humanities classes offered in their IB curriculum, while her friend took the HL science and math classes.

Moreover, DD and her BF were accepted at two of the same OOS schools and DD received much better merit aid packages.

I am pissed DD wasn’t waitlisted. Rejected outright.

+1 I thought it was a troll. Those are some low stats.

Huh. MY DS got in with worse stats (same SAT, lower GPA) and wasn't even an athlete. We are a brown family that immigrated here though. Maybe that was enough?

And is going to pay a lot more, and subsidize the tuition of OP's daughter's classmates.

OP, it’s 2024, not the late 90s. Your expectation was way out of line.

DP, so..... you're bragging that .... you paid to apply when it was actually free? You really are an idiot.

I'm embarrassed for the OP and really hope they're a troll. There's no way in hell their kid had a shot at UVA with that GPA and SAT. Just a quick glance at any college board, Naviance or a brief chat with the guidance counselor would have made that obvious.

so is the GPA.

OP's entitlement and privilege is showing

OP is profoundly disappointed and is lashing out, so show some grace instead piling on like a stinking pile of dog sh--. LOTS of states show big time in-state preference to the premier state schools. UVA does not. And it has to sting (and my DC is not applying there). VA states, like UVA, Tech, W&M, should absolutely place a priority on residency, imo. THey'd do it w/o sacrificing their brand, as well. It sucks they don't but places like NC do.
