Post-winter break fight at B-CC warrants comment from Jawando?

Apparently the video of the fight was jarring or bad enough that it warranted being sent to Jawando and him issuing a statement about it.

Two Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School students got into a fight Wednesday – the first day school resumed following winter break — confirmed Montgomery County Public Schools spokesperson Chris Cram on Thursday.

County Councilmember Will Jawando (D-At-large) released a statement Thursday about the fight after a video of the incident was shared with him and said that “violence has no place in our schools or community.”

MoCo360 has not yet been able to view the video.

According to Cram, an administrator who was on the scene de-escalated the fight immediately and school security staff aided as well.

“The incident was resolved very quickly,” Cram wrote in an email.

In his statement, Jawando commended the school administrator and security team for “acting swiftly.”

“Our students, teachers and staff deserve a safe place to learn and work,” Jawando said in the statement. “As an MCPS parent, all families deserve to feel safe sending their children to school. I will continue my efforts as chair of the Education and Culture Committee to ensure that MCPS has the funding to provide comprehensive support, including security, mental health services and restorative justice programs to address conflict and keep students safe.”

What happened? Was it more than just fisticuffs or....?

Seems this didn’t warrant being sent to Jawando. Instead once it was

This is a dangerous underpaid profession without respect and teachers are held accountable for behavior. I wouldn't recommend it.

Fights are bad. Fighting kids need better parenting, better peer culture, and maybe government intervention. The specifics can be debated, as they are.

Fights are often consensual. This is bad, but it's worse when a fight expands to include physical impact on third-parties, like staff.

The chair of the Education and Culture Committee being briefed and issuing a statement is normal and not interesting.

Fights are often not consensual and your tolerance for it is unacceptable and why students do it and get away with it. Schools need consensequcnes when it happens on school grounds. They should be suspended and considered for expulsion.

The video was shared by a parent on the BCC listserv yesterday. It was fisticuffs, but what makes it especially jarring is that it happened in front of the main office and they kept fighting even as the principal, security, etc. try to stop them. These students clearly didn't care/knew they wouldn't get in trouble/etc. At one point, the principal is physically restraining one of the students and the student is fighting him off. It also looks like the principal got hit (not on purpose, it was meant for the student he was restraining).

THIS is the problem. And this is why so many students (and teachers) simply don’t feel safe in our MCPS middle schools and high schools. It is out of control.

Jawano is just terrible.

He is the chair of the council's education committee. It's his duty to make a statement when something like this happens. Sorry you don't like him but he is an elected official and it seems most people paying attention and voting don't agree with your views.

Of course, no statement at all about this from McKnight. Asleep at the wheel again and forcing the county council to step up.

Jawando is always reaching for the next brass ring, even when ill-advised - hence his unsuccessful senatorial and previous congressional campaigns. He takes any opportunity to get his name in the media because he is a self-serving opportunist. Stop with the racism comment.

Just like our disdain for Kristin Mink, our dislike for Jawando has to do with his hypocrisy and terrible ideas, not his identity.

I don’t recall a single fight in my high school.

I grew up in Fairfax county schools and we definitely had fights

I'm curious to know how many posters here have actually been in a fight in high school. It happens.

How many were in high school in an ankle bracelet?

I saw this posted. If accurate, this was a serious fight involving students with prior serious issues.

“In this fight, the principal was knocked to the ground. The head of security was too and was pinned against the wall. He’s pretty seriously injured. Unknown when/if he will return to school.

It’s three kids in the fight, one is notorious for starting fights in and around school and never attending class. He severely beat a football player last year on a sidewalk by the school - sent the player to the hospital.

Another with an ankle monitor has been expelled from Clarksburg, Whitman, and Blair - where he found the principal’s home address and threatened her daughter. The suspension for the students ends Monday, when they will be back.

Lots of threats of retaliation. Security is afraid, teachers are talking about leaving. It’s the backstory that no one is willing to talk about that makes this a big deal.

Police couldn’t make it when 911 was called because they were at another emergency

Additionally, two BCC students are currently being held without bond for armed carjackings (they are 18); more than 10 have been arrested for carjacking related offenses this school year.

BCC kids were part of the looting of the Nike store on Bethesda Row. Then there was the fight after the WJ game.

Finally, a BCC security team member was severely beaten two years ago. A lot of violent crime issues. Not sure how this compares to other schools but a lot of issues and arrests in recent years.”
