Post-winter break fight at B-CC warrants comment from Jawando?

So MoCo 360 just reported on a fight that happened at B-CC after winter break: https://moco360.media/2024/01/04/fight-on-first-day-back-from-winter-break-at-bethesda-chevy-chase-high-school/

Apparently the video of the fight was jarring or bad enough that it warranted being sent to Jawando and him issuing a statement about it.

Two Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School students got into a fight Wednesday – the first day school resumed following winter break — confirmed Montgomery County Public Schools spokesperson Chris Cram on Thursday.

County Councilmember Will Jawando (D-At-large) released a statement Thursday about the fight after a video of the incident was shared with him and said that “violence has no place in our schools or community.”

MoCo360 has not yet been able to view the video.

According to Cram, an administrator who was on the scene de-escalated the fight immediately and school security staff aided as well.

“The incident was resolved very quickly,” Cram wrote in an email.

In his statement, Jawando commended the school administrator and security team for “acting swiftly.”

“Our students, teachers and staff deserve a safe place to learn and work,” Jawando said in the statement. “As an MCPS parent, all families deserve to feel safe sending their children to school. I will continue my efforts as chair of the Education and Culture Committee to ensure that MCPS has the funding to provide comprehensive support, including security, mental health services and restorative justice programs to address conflict and keep students safe.”

What happened? Was it more than just fisticuffs or....?

The video was shared by a parent on the BCC listserv yesterday. It was fisticuffs, but what makes it especially jarring is that it happened in front of the main office and they kept fighting even as the principal, security, etc. try to stop them. These students clearly didn't care/knew they wouldn't get in trouble/etc. At one point, the principal is physically restraining one of the students and the student is fighting him off. It also looks like the principal got hit (not on purpose, it was meant for the student he was restraining).

Wouldn’t say the bolded “especially jarring.” I really think folks in DCUM like sensationalizing things.

This is the PP you're quoting. Did you watch the video? You didn't think it was jarring that these students are throwing punches right in the main lobby outside the front office? I didn't think the fight itself was particularly bad (how sad that we see high school kids punching each other and don't think it's that bad because it's not at the level of violence of other fights we've seen recently).

One time when I was dropping off something for my kid in the office, years before covid, at a high school not in Ganglandia, there happened to be a fight right outside the front office. The office staff didn't seem to think it was anything unusual.

Agreed that this site sensationalizes things....were there not fights in school when you grew up? Did they just all of a sudden stop when admin tried to break it up? No they did not. Relax and talk to your kids.

If you have half a brain, your kids are in private school. MCPS schools are a cess pool.

Not all of us can afford $60k a year and have your privilege. Nor are there enough spots.

It’s hard to tolerate Jawando. He has no right to comment on school safety after his fight to remove SROs from schools even though 100% of principals wanted them to stay.

Someone needs to tell Jawando that restorative justice does not work.

Speaking of BCC fights, whatever happened to the kids who were fighting after that football game against Whitman back in September? Did they catch all of them?

I don’t recall a single fight in my high school.
