But come Admitted Student's Day last year, when they gave us a chance to look at the dorms, eat the food, etc... all of a sudden it didn't feel like such a good deal, OP. Quality is a bit lacking, compared to some other campuses in the larger DC area. UMD has better food (and better dorms, at least for Honors, which DC was invited to), for cheaper. GW has the best dorms and the best food in the area, and while the sticker price is more expensive, merit aid brought it down to the same prices as W&M. Georgetown is a cut above all of these in reputation, so maybe some people stuck in dodgy dorms there are OK with that. All this to say that W&M starts looking a lot less interesting when you get down to nitty-gritty comparisons.

The school is undergoing a massive renovation project with new dorms and buildings coming online every year for the next 3 years. They also hired a new food vendor last summer.

In terms of rankings, the USNWR criteria was altered pretty drastically this past year. It places a huge emphasis on Pell grant recipients, first gen students, etc. It hurt a number of smaller schools or schools without large endowments. It will be interesting to see how this helps/hurts the value placed on USNWR moving forward. It is definitely interesting to see how rankings were altered when they were moved away from academics and more towards other factors. It certainly helped Tech.

PP you replied to. That's good to know about the reno - I have younger kids who might be interested!

The same at UVA. One parent asked if they could bring a 'hot plate' to the dorms. WTF?? How is that a valid question to be wasting everyone's time asking? If they say 'no', will they not apply? And- let's get accepted and commit before we discuss the nitty gritty.

We experienced the same thing! “Insufferable” is exactly the right word. So many precious snowflakes there, and most seemed like the typical annoying theater kids. DS immediately took it off his list.

That's funny. I had the opposite experience. The UVA crowd was awful. So many strivers and annoying hyper snowflake parents--pushy and asking ridiculous questions like the 'hot plate' pp. Also- the brown-nosing of the panel. OMG.

There were a lot of boys with athletic sweatshirts when my son toured. Many that looked like him. Pretty chill.

This is absolutely correct with regard to the change in rankings. The quality of academics has not changed.

I don't think that's true at all. People on these forms put wayy too much emphasis on rankings

+1 When my kind of sporty, kind of nerdy DS toured, there seemed to be a bunch of boys like him around campus. Definitely not a lot of lax bros which he is absolutely cool with.

Nothing’s happened to William & Mary. Calm down.

Anonymous wrote:USNWR now emphasizes total cost of attendance. UVA and William and Mary are both very expensive public schools for instate and out of state. That dragged down their ratings.

This change makes the ratings more valuable
To the vast majority of families who care about total cost. Not so much if you’re comfortably full pay.

UVA’s ranking did not drop in the new rankings, and while W&M’s did it had been slowly dropping for the last several years.

In other words, you’re wrong.

UVA dropped two spots from last year. W&M's drop this year was comparable to its peer Wake Forest's ranking drop.

I know I know rankings are irrelevant - but I can assure you they drive application tiering and strategies at my DCs top private

Then chase the woke schools. W&M most likely isn’t the place for your child if your into USNWR rankings.

Only morons and a$$hats use “woke.”

? my DC is a theater kid and is pretty laid back. Never knew theater kids had this kind of stereotype.
