what happened to William and Mary??

starting to look at schools with my sophomore, and absolutely shocked that W&M is ranked behind Rutgers, Ohio State and UMD - 3 schools I just assumed it’s comfortably better than. I know I know rankings are irrelevant - but I can assure you they drive application tiering and strategies at my DCs top private

If your DC attends a top private, one of the benefits theoretically would be college advising.

As for ranking, US News changed the formula (again) that led to significant changes.

well you can minimize it to change in calculation but 100% will have an impact in applicant profile

Usn&wr rankings changed considerably this year. No longer remotely useful for academic information- they’re all about social mobility.

Well, that says more about the families at your school than W &M.

Why surround your impression able kids with a sea of status seekers (unless you are cut from the same clothe?)

USNWR now emphasizes total cost of attendance. UVA and William and Mary are both very expensive public schools for instate and out of state. That dragged down their ratings.

This change makes the ratings more valuable
To the vast majority of families who care about total cost. Not so much if you’re comfortably full pay.

Only idiots live and die by USNWR

Oh no, what will they do without kids from your top private?!

OP, It seems your “top private” has very superficial students unwilling or incapable of researching the best college

We love the W&M campus, and Colonial Williamsurg next door. But come Admitted Student's Day last year, when they gave us a chance to look at the dorms, eat the food, etc... all of a sudden it didn't feel like such a good deal, OP. Quality is a bit lacking, compared to some other campuses in the larger DC area. UMD has better food (and better dorms, at least for Honors, which DC was invited to), for cheaper. GW has the best dorms and the best food in the area, and while the sticker price is more expensive, merit aid brought it down to the same prices as W&M. Georgetown is a cut above all of these in reputation, so maybe some people stuck in dodgy dorms there are OK with that. All this to say that W&M starts looking a lot less interesting when you get down to nitty-gritty comparisons.

Then chase the woke schools. W&M most likely isn’t the place for your child if your into USNWR rankings.

The school is undergoing a massive renovation project with new dorms and buildings coming online every year for the next 3 years. They also hired a new food vendor last summer.

In terms of rankings, the USNWR criteria was altered pretty drastically this past year. It places a huge emphasis on Pell grant recipients, first gen students, etc. It hurt a number of smaller schools or schools without large endowments. It will be interesting to see how this helps/hurts the value placed on USNWR moving forward. It is definitely interesting to see how rankings were altered when they were moved away from academics and more towards other factors. It certainly helped Tech.

W&M parents across the country will breathe a sigh of relief if you convince your demon "top DC private" spawn not to apply there.

Admitted students day in 2022–parents were asking “me” questions in front of hundreds of people and would not shut up. Why can’t students have cars? Child has a gluten free diet etc etc. child needs AC. it went on and on. The parents were insufferable. DD said on the way home she was sticking with another admit.
