Student Culture at Yorktown HS

White, fratty, bro school. Good at lacrosse and heckling. Academics are a step down from W-L.

This is freaking great thread name. Can’t wait for the trolls. I mean, you cannot seriously expect a real answer to this on DCUM? In a school of what, 2000 kids?

Grabbing my popcorn….

calm down, it's a reasonable question.

My child is admittedly, a little socially awkward, but has had a great experience at Yorktown, finding their people and not encountering any bullying.

How much does the school do to make sure gets don't get lost in the huge student population?

The school is much whiter than the schools where there are drug problems

Oh please.
"Much whiter" in this case also means "Much richer and therefore more expensive drugs."

Exactly. And none of the drugs kids would buy from a dealer are safe from additives.

In terms of that culture, probably more than most public high schools in the region, but nothing terribly alarming. ARLnow, the popular hyperlocal news site published a story a few years ago (pre covid era) about students at the school who requested teachers take down certain politically progressive banners and posters. I don’t recall if they prevailed in the effort.

To add to the above, minority students did publicly complain to the school board about harassment at the school. This was back in the fall of 2016, during the boundary change controversy that moved more largely white, and very wealthy neighborhoods to Yorktown.

During the boundary fight, there was a coalition of students (mostly from underrepresented minorities) who appealed for boundaries that balanced demographics at all three high schools. Unfortunately for the group, their concerns were not addressed, and the adopted boundaries further concentrated wealth at Yorktown.

Wait - public school teachers at Yorktown have displayed openly-partisan banners and posters in classrooms?

She didn't say openly partisan, she said political progressive those are two different things. I.E. Vote Joe Biden or support democrats would be partisan. Black Lives Matter or Support Trans Kids would be politically progressive. They are different and generally subject to different rules.

No. The racist families at YHS behaved poorly a few years ago. Not sure if any of them still have kids at the school though.

We opted for W-L.
