What’s it like for the non-athlete at Yorktown? Is there a lot of bullying?

This is freaking great thread name. Can’t wait for the trolls. I mean, you cannot seriously expect a real answer to this on DCUM? In a school of what, 2000 kids?

Grabbing my popcorn….

OP, you may not get a sense of student culture at YHS; but I guess you're getting a sense of parent culture.

I’m going to bit that no one who has made any of these comments actually has children who go to Yorktown.

It’s a competitive environment acedemically with many opportunities to make friends either through the arts or clubs if your child is not athletically inclined. Unfortunately, many of the sports teams are very tough to get onto so kids do find other outlets.

What about drug use, etc.? Is it better/worse than other high schools in the area?

How much does the school do to make sure gets don't get lost in the huge student population?

Yorktown for many years has had a successful R.O.C.S program, that has helped create a caring and supportive atmosphere for all students. Specific info is on the school’s homepage.

Calm down everyone. 🤣 It is summer transfer season for a lot of families in the foreign affairs community. There are forums to ask this question from other foreign service families but not with any or much anonymity. I asked the same question, about Kenmore, in multiple online forums before moving back last summer. Not saying this is OP's reason, but there are lots of reasons why someone would ask this anonymously.
OP, I don't have a kid at Yorktown. APS schools are so big that most kids find their niche. I do think there is bullying in most schools, unfortunately.

PP here: re: drinking, drugs, sex: you are going to find this in all high schools.

We moved to Loudoun County to avoid it

The school is much whiter than the schools where there are drug problems

No high school is immune from very serious issues and access to fake drugs with fentanyl is everywhere.

There are drugs available to any kid at any school, no matter what race. Be smarter.
