Relatives who always want to bring their dog!!!

If it’s a small pool house why does it have a bed in it set up for guests??
What are your allergy symptoms and do allergy meds help? Do you sleep in the pool house?

It's her property. If she has to tell a white lie, so be it. She shouldn't need to justify it.

But she doesn’t have to tell the white lie to US.

I was going to disagree with you but then I re-read OP and it’s pretty clear you’re right. If it were sincerely allergies the cost/effort of building the pool house wouldn’t matter. Nor that a pet is “so much” to ask when visiting. But if the true concern were dislike:wear & tear from pets? Ah. Now it makes sense.

DP. Even if the wear and tear is the issue, I think that’s fair. I have a dog and can recognize it causes damage to our home. His nails have scratched up our newly refinished hard wood floors (yes we trim them regularly, but there are still marks). He sometimes barfs up food on our rugs, not to mention the fur and dirt tracked in. So we have to deep clean them 2x/year. He’s left brown spots in our grass from peeing. We accept all this because we love him. But I would never expect anyone else to open their home to him regardless of allergies. If they are a major dog lover and offer that would be one thing. But no way would I ever even ask to bring my dog to someone’s brand new pool house.

OP doesn’t need to justify her reasons.

Anybody who has a problem with kids or dogs just sucks.

She doesn't have to "admit it", even if it's true, just to pacify the dog nuts.

But why lie to DCUM when crowd sourcing?

Presumably because she's not lying, and genuinely doesn't want dog dander in her pool house.

I'd guess it's that they saved to build a poolhouse which is not only, or even primarily, a guesthouse, and she doesn't want to have an allergic reaction when she uses it.

Kids and dogs are not the same. It's telling that you are including them in the same class.

just say no. how is this difficult?

I would have my husband tell them that we are so excited for them to stay with us, but that you are allergic to dogs. The send them the name of a local doggie day care that also boards pets.

Don’t do it!

If you let them stay even once, that will be a really difficult boundary to reset. Even if it’s horrible for you and you have a terrible reaction when you’re in the pool house. They will not care and they will minimize it as no big deal because you still have your house pet free. They will think you’re being petty and you’ll think they’re being jerks. Your relationship will sour.

It’s always much easier to never let the dog in your house than to try to set limits after “trying it out.”

You're such a jerk. I have a kid with a serious allergy to several animals. It causes asthma attacks. People die from them. You are an uneducated idiot.

All of this is irrelevant.

No means no. Period. End of story.
