William and Mary - how many Bs did your student have and still get admitted?

Anonymous
A LOT, all in Honors/AP classes though, so got a .5-1.0 bump.

Just looked it up and she had 2 B-s, a B, and 5 B+s through junior year, there were a few more senior year

GPA at the end of junior year was a 4.1 weighted. SAT was 1380, FCPS. ED1 applicant, which probably made the difference.

3Bs junior year and 3Bs sophomore year.

This. You shouldn't have any if you're from a NOVA public, per staff at our HS. It's rare you'll get in with Bs.

From APS, one B+ Sophomore year.

Lots. 3.5UW; 4.0 weighted, 1480 SAT; 11 APs and math past BC Calc. OOS private with notoriously difficult grading.

Totally not true! I'm one of the PPs whose kid had a bunch of Bs. They were admitted (class of '26) from an FCPS school (not the top 3 but up there) and while the fall semester was a bit of an adjustment (GPA was 2.9 I think), they have almost all As this semester (still has finals left).

ED is the way to go for W&M. No way DC would have gotten in RD with their stats.

My OOS son was admitted- 2 Bs (in GT classes) Sophomore Year. W & M is my favorite college tour ever. A very engaging and funny Admin official started off by saying- We are often asked do you prefer a student with an A in a regular class or a B in an Honors/AP class. He stated, here are W & M we want students with As in AP classes.

+1. I’m another multiple B parent of the unhooked white female above. It happened in ED1 for my kid with multiple Bs. Strong junior year, strong senior schedule and junior year that could be written off due to COVID helped. So did a very strong ACT helped. HS in the top 1/4 from FCPS. Her guidance counselor told her she should get in ED1, but would not RD. And was right. Friends with much higher GPAs did not get in RD.

A benefit of ED that Solingo discussed that people on this Board don’t. Fewer applications means more time with each app to really understand the kids story and consider fit.

3.5 first semester. One B, rest As second semester going into finals.

^^ sorry. Sophomore year could be explained by COVID.

Definitely did. My DD has a very similar profile but higher SAT (1480) in APS. She didn't want to ED but demonstrated a lot of interest otherwise (on-campus visit, interviewed, attended school visit) and was waitlisted. I thought she was likely to be denied without ED so I think the interest helped. She's going elsewhere but had the Spring-start option if she'd wanted it.

Not true. I posted above. My DS not only had several B's but he had one C+ and got in RD from FCPS. The C+ was sophomore year when he was online for 3/4 of the year. He did take the most rigorous courses - he is doing the full IB diploma.

I think, if I'm remembering right, she had 1 B or B+ pretty much every year and everything else was an A or A-.

Deferred ED, accepted RD.
