To be a match, I think he needs to show he’s a good match. Based on what you’ve said, W&M isn’t an obvious choice and they do care about demonstrated interest. His stats are very strong. |
Thanks for responding. But why isn’t W&M an obvious choice? Bc we’re out of state? My kid liked it a lot when we visited… |
Very high stats science magnet kid from oos. A more typical profile would be a student interested in IR or Government with an SAT in the 1400s. I’d assume he has other top choices. But they’d love a high stats boy interested in science. Interview slots are open now - reserve one and show that interest. |
William and Mary is very strong in base sciences (Chemistry, Biology, Physics) and cross-disciplinary areas like Neuroscience. The commitment to STEM teaching is strong and most STEM undergraduates do faculty-mentored research. It is close to the top for public universities in percentage of undergraduates going on to get STEM PhDs. The Medical school admit rate is something like 25 points above the national average. |
We toured the integrated science center, which has been built over a nearly 20 year period. The made a concerted effort to brings STEM areas together to foster interdisciplinary study, collaboration, and research. It was very nice. |

I did get a vibe that most science majors focus on the life sciences and may be trying for med school. But my son really liked it and the physics prof he talked to was super nice and encouraging. I think my son liked the generally intellectual vibe. Plus the frisbee! I
think it felt good to really like a place that doesn’t have a ridiculous single digit acceptance rate. |
W&M has also has a fair number of majors on a percentage basis in majors like Chemistry, Physics, and Geology. For majors like Physics, even some large publics have relatively few undergraduate majors. They may easily have more faculty than majors. |
| My DC got admitted EA to engineering with 2C and 6B. Took 14 APs and had a 36 ACT. Good EC but not excellent. |
Try not to feed into the vortex of insanity from DCMU. |
They don't have engineering? |
Nor EA. |
This is completely false. My mom lives works in Financial Services at W&M and this is my sons target school. She friends with everyone in admissions and what they much prefer is rigor. A B in AP calc is not the same as a B in academic history. Your counselors are incorrect. |
| They have engineering and a combined program with Columbia. https://www.wm.edu/as/undergraduate/more-pathways/engineering/index.php |
Yeah but you aren't admitted to that directly nor do you indicate that on your app. PP was definitely confusing W&M with a different school. |
FCPS or? What's the GPA - weighted and unweighted? What's the area of study? Any hooks/URM? |
