William and Mary - how many Bs did your student have and still get admitted?

Is W&M a match or a reach for an OOS white boy with a 1560 SAT from a STEM magneT, all As so far. Unhooked. Won’t do ED.

I'd say reach just because of OOS. Class of 2026's OOS acceptance rate was 28% and it probably dropped even further this year.

Neighbor's kid got into Purdue, UW Madison, UMN, and Penn State (but not Pitt)

Multiple Bs not just for W&M but also admit to Harvard and Penn -- no hooks. Rest of grades As with lots of rigor. Harvard does not want a class with everyone with all perfect scores.

Sounds great. Now, the rest of the application needs to measure up.

What question were you answering?

Unlike many public universities, William and Mary doesn't admit based on rigid numbers formulas. That doesn't mean they aren't looking for high stats.

A match. They also have more F than M students so your white boy is in with a chance.

It's not weird. It became so as the colleges needed a way to evaluated unhooked students. A kid with a 4.6 has 12 AP courses with all As. That's what you need to get into an elite school. Each B drags down the 4.6

It's weird. Amazingly enough, those of us with 3.5 GPA's are fully functional adult. Even went to elite schools. So what changed?

AP courses. WE had 4.0s, which meant straight As in regular courses. Now kids need a 4.6 to be competittive which means 12 AP courses with perfect grades.

I graduated in 1997 with 2 AP courses (physics & chemistry), which was on the low side. Couldn't hack AP math and hated the humanities, which rules out English, foreign language, whatever else. But all those courses existed back then in my suburban high school.

PP said we didn't have as many available APs. That's not true.
