seriously OP - you really have no clue. My dad came here with $600 in his pocket in the 70s and the clothes on his back. Thats it. He was an orphan from a wartorn country with a funny name, a funny accent and dark skin. He has worked like a dog his whole life and now owns a home in southern california, has two successful college educated (first in his family) kids and is truly a success story.
If he can make it just about anyone can in this country. i firmly believe that. i also believe that there is systemic racism on many levels - but also sooooo many folks offering a hand to lift up the disadvantaged minorities that it seems surprising so many dont take advantage |
Well that doesn't make sense. No one who arrived poorly resourced is doing well YET. It takes years, sometimes even a generation or two. That was the case for the Ellis Island (and Angel Island) immigrants too. |
We’re talking about in 2023, not the 70s. And like you said, your parent was highly-motivated. There was self-selection at play. |
| It’s like when people try to compare charter schools & private schools to the local public school & say that the former is succeeding and the latter are failing. |
of course they are.. family connections. |
+1 People really are ignorant and stupid. |
That is also because worldwide, more people are also getting educated. When my parents left their home country, only the top 1% went to college. Today, about 50% of the country is college educated. If you want to look at today's immigrant data, you also have to look the global data. Data analysis is important. |
Why? Because cognitive dissonance. They internalize these conversations and take them as personal attacks on their character. |

Some of it's just racism or ignorance. But I think it's partly because discussions of systemic racism tend to lack nuance. Yeah, the system is tilted against people in certain demographics. But ALSO a lot of people in those demographics shoot themselves in the foot in various avoidable ways.
They aren't the only ones who shoot themselves in the foot. But the people outside of that demographic just have to deal with the consequences of those bad choices, and nobody is making excuses for them. There are lots of people in disfavored demographics that succeed and lots of people in favored demographics that fail; meaning that systemic racism is only part of any given story. Maybe nobody is denying that it's only part of the story, but the other parts of the story tend to get ignored in these discussions. |
This. Heck, look at all the immigrants who are able to support themselves and buy homes in Montgomery County where the cost of living is exorbitant. They bust their butts working for others, starting a business, and making it work. And they do this without the benefit of a fancy education. And they deal with racism like everyone else. |
| Some people get off on punching down. |
| It’s pure luck. Luck and circumstance/connections. There are more people with businesses that fail (including Caucasian). Those stories are simply not told as loudly. Like anything with success it’s about connections and luck. If you find the right people to support you, to invest in you, to save money to not lose everything, you can succeed at a lot. If anywhere in your process you stumble financially and cannot recover, it takes a larger toll. |
You're a racist clueless pos. Share your dumb post with your cleaning lady if you dare. |
