The kids are alright: Gen Z may have kept the Red Wave at bay

By the time Gen Z ages into their “conservative years” they will be dealing with the harsh realities of global warming.
The environment will always be part of their thought process.

There was never any risk of a red wave. Just the usual Beltway bubble groupthink about midterms.

We are all dealing with the harsh realities now.

Maybe but by their "conservative years" OBX will probably be under water and NY, Miami, and other coastal cities will need sea walls to keep from being under water, probably unsuccessful. That's next level "dealing with harsh realities."

My Gen Z college kid and many at his school voted by absentee ballot. The President emailed amazing and thoughtful nudges over the last month. Students are extremely involved in and out of the classroom on global issues, ESG, and righting the wrongs of past. They’re much more politically savvy then past generations who typically had a single platform…Vietnam, 9/11, Afghanistan. Gen Z is dealing with the weight of the world. Props to them for giving us hope.

I always had a theory that it's not so much younger people switching to be more conservative when they're older, but younger people who are apolitical becoming conservative or center-right when they age into the demographic that votes more. Of course there are those who do change, one way or another, but typically under 30 turnout is very low, and activist progressives remain activist progressive, but end up outnumbered by those who never used to vote but start voting more after age 40 when they prioritize taxes and 401ks and individual finance.

Gen Z and younger millennials may buck that trend, because they aren't reaching the same financial stability milestones that boomers did in the 80s. People under 35 generally have more sense of instability and uncertainty than their parents did.

I think there may be something to this theory. IME, people who vote consistently when they are young tend to be very politically engaged and motivated by bigger issues than just their own day-to-day lives. I would be surprised if significant numbers of them do a 180 on their political beliefs as they get older. But people who are not motivated by big-picture, societal level issues are more likely to vote based purely on their own individual interests, which for many people does translate to voting Republican if, for instance, they are affluent people who would benefit from tax cuts for the wealthy and are confident they could send themselves or their daughters to Europe for abortions.

It will be interesting to see how Florida reacts when Miami is under water. Sea rise will really harm a lot of Florida. (outside of storms) Sea rise is happening faster than scientists predicted.

Yup. I do not like this whole 40s but being treated like a 60 something. Nope.

Famine, drought and the frequency of extreme weather events are much more immediate issues. Large portions of the Mississippi are no longer navigable right now and US farmers can’t get grain to ports.

And LGBTQ rights.

My gen z voting kids are more passionate about RvW and LGBTQ rights than all other issues.

Do they live on their own? Do you still support them? I don’t think people fully mature in their appreciation of money and government until they are 100% on their own. Many young millennials and Gen Z are still on some form of parental dole.
