I always had a theory that it's not so much younger people switching to be more conservative when they're older, but younger people who are apolitical becoming conservative or center-right when they age into the demographic that votes more. Of course there are those who do change, one way or another, but typically under 30 turnout is very low, and activist progressives remain activist progressive, but end up outnumbered by those who never used to vote but start voting more after age 40 when they prioritize taxes and 401ks and individual finance.

I think there may be something to this theory.  IME, people who vote consistently when they are young tend to be very politically engaged and motivated by bigger issues than just their own day-to-day lives.  I would be surprised if significant numbers of them do a 180 on their political beliefs as they get older.  But people who are not motivated by big-picture, societal level issues are more likely to vote based purely on their own individual interests, which for many people does translate to voting Republican if, for instance, they are affluent people who would benefit from tax cuts for the wealthy and are confident they could send themselves or their daughters to Europe for abortions.[/quote]
