Just tagging on (hope that's okay) because I am ALSO 53 and have lost 75 pounds in the last 13 months. I went from 257 to 180, mostly through diet (generally low carb through lots of salmon and chicken and also started intermittent fasting about 5 or 6 months in). Every Friday I eat a burger and chips though, ha. I have only started adding in some exercise -- and only walks -- in the last month or so as I have felt more fit. Hoping to lose another 25 before moving to maintenance.

Go, OP, fellow lion of fitness and weight loss!

Ah thank you. I'm 5'7 too, the PP who asked. That is helpful to know for comparison / encouragement.

I love this thread. I am 55 years old, 5'8" and have lost 12lbs with low carb eating since March. I have 23 lbs to go. This has been a stressful time for me with an ill spouse and difficult teenagers, so I am thankful to have made any progress. It is possible over 50.

Anonymous wrote:That is great, op and you sound a lot more active than I am. I'm also 53, walk 4+ miles per day and have lost 20 lbs since early May, going from 167 to 147
I'm 5'7 so I'd like to get down to 135lbs but I think it's all gone a bit "plateau" and slower so don't expect the rest to come off so quickly.

This is great! What is your approach?

I limit what I eat. So I don't eat the sweet stuff or the fried / fatty stuff ever and I focus on limiting what I do eat to about 1200 calories per day. Skim milk only, no snacks, balance. It's good and it feels like a permanent change, not a quick fix. I think I can happily eat this way now as I'm rarely hungry and I also rarely have stomach issues, it's all an improvement. I'm sure that the weight loss will just level off at some point.

Doing this in the face of adversity is actually a huge achievement.
