Some think that they will shutdown VA.

"Some" think all sorts of things. Heck, some even lend credence to all sorts of things.

MCPS has said they're committed to it for the long haul, though. They may revisit if the state ever gets into it. The state may well offer some money to allow other counties' residents to use MCPS's version rather than trying to launch another one.

Some say that VA is an utter failure at MCPS. I wonder why would state inherit a failed system. Aren't they better off starting a new system at Frederick County or Howard County where the schools are rated at much higher level than MCPS?

LOL. Only in DCUM worldview.

only for those who do not know how to google.

Why do you think it’s an utter failure? They are not shutting it down.

Why is that MCPS is so secretive about everything now a days? Only communication is PR junk. Nothing useful for parents or students.

Its June. School just got out what a week ago. This is not a big deal. If they offer one they will announce it when they can. VA did a good job this year given it was its first year.

It is a big deal for those who care about kids academic performance and not sports and games. Why are they so secretive? Why can't there be transparency? Where is the plan?

Yeah google tells me that 6 of the top 10 rated schools in Maryland are in MCPS, just one in Howard and none in Frederick.

They haven't been secretive at all. Yes, there is a plan and yes, its been discussed within the VA community. Maybe you should go to the meetings and pay attention more.

no update on the website. Did you hear anything about applications? What are the criteria they are going to use to accept or deny students who applied? Is it also going to be "lottery" as well? like the "lottery magnet" programs?

Mcps has shared all that. No, it’s not like a lottery magnet. Call them if you need to know your application status.

I'm guessing MCPS will need to keep virtual at the school level if the local school can support it. I did some analysis on MCPS data and if they don't, there will be long-term planning issues that occur when they do the County-Wide Boundary Study.

https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/sharedaccountability/reports/

Between 2019 and 2021, MCPS lost 7.2% (5,489) of all MCPS Elementary School students and 3.5% (1,330) of all MCPS Middle School Students and only a handful of High School students (< 0.2%).

Three Special Program schools had a significant enrollment drop:
John L Gildner Regional Institute for Children & Adolesents lost 10 students (8.9%)
*Rock Terrace School lost 14 students (15.2%)
Stephen Knolls School lost 20 students (26.3%)

Between 2019 and 2020, two schools were shut down (Alternative Programs with 126 students and MCPS Transitions School with 55 students).

Between 2019 and 2021, this is how the Elementary Schools stack up in terms of overall student body loss. Schools that gained students are towards the bottom of the list.
