We are #4 on the waitlist for BRES, 1st grade. Are there two Chinese immersion classes per grade at this school?

No, only one class at BRES

Anyone have experience at Maryvale? We are waitlisted in the high teens - potentially a spot. I’ve heard great things about RCF and Sligo form friends, but not a lot about Maryvale (or other schools). I’d love to know others experience, mainly with the teachers.

I've heard good things about the French program. Have also heard that many decline their spots, so if you're in the lower teens, you might have a chance.

At my DC's immersion program there are so many siblings who got in, but this year it doesn't seem like siblings get any preferential ranking.

We are waitlisted #1 for Bayard Rustin and #15 for Maryvale. Maryvale is our local school and the one we really want — should we hold out for it at that number?

Kindergarten or 1st grade?

what number? If you have a low waitlist number, especially for K, you’re likely to get in.

Depends on the program and the grade. If it's for K for Page, you have a good chance to get in if you're #20, but for Rock Creek Forest, you might need to be #1-3.

I think RCF usually goes at least to #20 on the waitlist. At least it did our year (we were #18). We got in right before school started.

That's a tough one. The problem with the Chinese immersion is it's only half day, so you really aren't learning all that much. #15 is a decent number but there's no guarantee of getting in. I think this year there were a lot more people in the lottery, so you might have a higher number of people declining seats. If it was me, I might take the chance. Good luck!

FWIW we drew #10 for BRES and #10 for Page for K last year. We were called for BRES first and declined because we preferred a full immersion program. We applied for all the options available to us and our waitlist numbers for the other programs were much higher.

really hard to say what chances will be like this year. with covid, we heard they went really high in the waitlist. you have more a shot for the schools that have 2 classrooms as opposed to 1.

Does mcps ever share how many people actually apply?

No, but my kids was #381 on a waitlist once, so... a lot.

We've always applied (4 kids) and got selected for Chinese when it was at College Gardens, and then another time got called for Maryvale the week before school started, with #41. We declined both, because we wouldn't have been able to make the CGES logistics work, and the Maryvale kid had high anxiety about starting school and we decided a last minute change would be especially difficult. Honestly this year with our 4th, it was more just to see what numbers would come through. We applied for all programs and were waitlisted in the 100s and up for everything. Oh well.
