If only conservatism in the US circa today meant that, and not tiki torches, invading and vandalizing the Capitol, and conspiracy theories Is VA Tech conservative? It's a land grant technical school in a rural region of a Southern state. Yes, it is conservative. |
VT is the most backwoods and country of the top VA publics. Cowboy boots are a fashion staple, and country music is everywhere. It’s in Blacksburg, after all, and their mascot is a Turkey. Conservative, depends on the kid, but the stadium did participate in the F Joe Biden trend, so there’s that. |
relative to other t100s yes |
What's it like being so narrow minded? |
Tell me you've never been to Virginia Tech without telling me you've never been to Virginia Tech. |
Tech is more conservative that other VA state schools (excepting VMI) because of its full time cadet corps and its history. However, it it large and there are enough students of every political and social value persuasion for him to find his cadre. Yes, Tech has “weed out” classes especially in engineering, but if your DC is coming from NOVA, they should have had adequate preparation. |
SW VA is pretty deeply red. The student body is probably more moderate, but if the PP is right about the idiotic LGB chant, that would definitely give me pause |
If you believe this and vote Republican you are either not conservative or a hypocrite |
Yep. I graduated in 2010 and Bob McDonnell was invited to speak then. Nothing to do with politics. It’s a huge school and you will find all ranges of student politics. The surrounding area is mostly conservative, but Blacksburg itself is not. |
Blacksburg and the surrounding county tend to vote majority democrat. On a map it may look like it’s in a sea of red, but that sea has very few actual people in it. It’s misleading in the same way the national electoral map shows a sea of red from Louisiana to Idaho. Lots of land but little population. OP, my best friend from college taught at a Blacksburg HS whole his wife got her PHD at VT (and was associate professor for a while before moving PA). No one would confuse him for a conservative and he really liked it there. |
UVA can be more conservative. |
Driving to VT from NoVA, we saw quite a few Trump and F*ck Biden signs as well as a huge confederate flag intentionally raised on the property for all to see. OP, after watching some of the MAGA rallies, the White Nationalist attack on the crowd in Charlottesville and the attack on the Capital, I understand your concern for your son. Given the increase in random verbal and physical attacks, as well as gun violence, every parent must consider the safety of their child when selecting a school.
OP, there are definitely MAGA supporters in the surrounding area, but VT has a large student body and seems to have students across the political spectrum. I would focus more on the weed out courses, which are real at all engineering schools. Your son should be ready to grind at every school on his list. |
30,500 students attend VA Tech. No. They are not all conservative. AND--the majority of students are from NoVA.
None of my friends were conservatives. And many work in very 'liberal' areas today. Blacksburg is a college town. The University dominates the town which leads the area to be much more liberal than SW VA as a whole. It is definitely less conservative than Richmond or even UVA. UVA and U Richmond students are a bunch of little Republicans. A sea of Patagonia vests and bow ties. |
That's the one advantage to SLACs with engineering or very small engineering schools like Harvey Mudd |
Vineyard Vines, Lily, Patagonia, Bow ties and Republicans. Not at VT. |
