We really need to a range for colleges - the wacko left, the left, the moderate, moderate right and wacko right.

I wish more colleges were moderate/moderate right. I think colleges are so busy doing social justice BS that they are failing to focus on education and skills needed for industry. I welcome colleges that look at education as having an obligation to provide results. There are conservative values - the leftists never talk about actual education at these schools. I would not call the religious schools conservative in that sense, the are wacko right, their own little factions of religious extremism.

The schools that are favored on DCUM are of a liberal arts bent. Sounds like you would prefer your child pursue a career that is certification-based, such as allied health field. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t really matter where you go to undergrad for those careers.

VT was the opposite end of culture shock. Both are very Southern in different ways.

I feel like people on this thread are absolutely terrified of being associated with anything labeled “conservative,” and they are grasping at straws and anecdotes when the vast majority of the country would spend five minutes on any Virginia college campus and call it conservative. It is what it is. No one is saying you are conservative because you went there, or your kid is conservative because they go there, but come on, people. I’ve lived in Va and voted blue my whole life. Our universities are more conservative than they are liberal.

Just because you haven’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. The Ag school. Pickup trucks. Music. There is a rural Southern element. It is a state university in the rural South - it is what it is.

UVA has bow-tie Southern element.

If you’re not from the South it’s very obvious.

It's more that it's a Ag school. I went to Cal Poly SLO in very Blue CA. But it's also an Ag school so plenty of cowboy boots, trucks, country music. But, like VT (where DS is a student) there are lots of other kinds of students. And, being "country" does not necessarily = conservative. Yes, that group does lean more conservative but there are lots of different types of people from different areas. It seems a lot of DCUM types tend to say they want "diversity" but only a certain kind of diversity.

No one wants diversity that involves racism, homophobia, and bigotry.

Foxfield is only Greek. My kid was there for four years and never did anything like that. I had to ask him what you were talking about
