My senior has been admitted to the the engineering program at Virginia Tech. We were all looking forward to attending Hokie Focus this weekend, but then DH started digging around in Niche and found that VA Tech is considered to be "conservative". My take is that it is a big school and will have a wide range of students with all kinds of opinions. The school wouldn't have a 100% liberal student body like Oberlin, of course, but that holding generally left leaning opinions won't make our child a friendless outcast or social pariah. Right? I am also wary of any information obtained from Niche, but DH is now really worried.
And, adding one other VA Tech question - I've heard some engineering programs have "weed out" classes for first year students. Is that the case at Tech? We are not from VA, so a little in the dark here. |
Gov. of VA, Glenn Youngkin, is MAGA. He is VA Tech chosen commencement speaker this year. Enough said |
I’m no fan of Youngkin but to be fair, VT has a tradition of inviting the Virginia governor to speak at graduation his first term in office. |
VT isn't conservative. I would say it tends more apolitical, but those that are tend liberal. |
I should say his first year of office, not first term. |
Correct. McAuliffe and Northam both spoke when they were governors. |
I can’t believe people actually worry about stuff like this. Maybe it would be good for your son to get out of his bubble. |
It will be fine, it’s not super conservative. Yes, there are weed out classes where aren’t they? |
Get over yourself. He is not "MAGA" and the tradition at VT has long been to invite the new governor to give the commencement speech. Since 1990, first-year Virginia governors L. Douglas Wilder, George F. Allen, James S. Gilmore III, Mark R. Warner, Timothy M. Kaine, Robert F. McDonnell, Terence “Terry” McAuliffe, and Ralph Northam have delivered the commencement address at Virginia Tech. https://theroanokestar.com/2022/03/30/governor-glenn-youngkin-to-deliver-2022-va-tech-commencement-address/ |
+100 My daughter is currently trying to decide between VT and another school and the idea of having multiple political perspectives on campus is very appealing to her. |
My son graduated from Virginia Tech in engineering. We are from Connecticut. My sense is that there is a wide range of students in the engineering school, across the political spectrum with about half from out of state. I wouldn't worry about conservative or liberal; the engineers are too busy to have time for politics. Most engineering schools have weed out courses; no worse at Virginia Tech than most engineering schools. |
Niche says 59% of students identify as moderate, liberal, or progressive. 13% identify as conservative. 1% identify as very conservative. It is not a conservative school. If anything, the admin has become woke. |
Oh God, the horror -a conservative school! Lol. You do realize that more than half of America is “conservative” but you don’t even know what that means do you mom. It doesn’t mean you are a Trumper. It doesn’t even mean you are a Republican. It means you believe in a small, unbloated federal government with more power than we are seeing now relegated to the states. The states are to act as incubators on ideas and policies ranging from education to abortion with the better policies being picked up by other states. They believe I. A federal government taxing only for things that a federal should do that tge states cannot do well such as taxation for military, postal service and army. Conservatives believe in fiscal responsibility and a balanced budget. Small federal taxes. Everything we don’t have now. Is that so scary?
NO it’s not a conservative school. Yes the engineering school is famous for culling they first year clasd |
Republicans couldn’t balance the budget if their lives depended on it. |
Glenn Youngkin absolutely is MAGA. Know him personally. He is 100% a Trumplican although tried during the campaign for Governor to hide it so as to win over moderates. It worked but ever since his entire Agenda has been MAGA-based. |
