The county survey has your answer, OP.
I swear, do any of you read your email from the county?? They mention this at least once every year! https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/SSAW-FFX-Youth-Survey-8-10-12.pdf |

| Most of us did circa 1970 and the parents had no clue. They were sure it wasn’t happening. I could never understand how parents could be so stupid. People’s ability to believe what they want to believe never ceases to amaze me. My concern actually runs the other way. DS is 14 and has no interest whatsoever in sex, which I find weird. I was girl crazy at his age. DS can’t understand what I ever found interesting about girls. I’ve broached the subject of whether his interests run in the other direction but no, he just isn’t interested. DW sees nothing weird about it at all. At school reunions when we see our former partners it’s always happy. VERY happy. I’ve never known anyone to regret anything. I know I’m going to get flailed for this but it’s the way it is. |
I tend to agree with you, as far as tweens and teens having less sex and less sexual interest today vs 70s/80s. With one exception: girls are definitely experimenting with girls far more. Summer camp, sleep overs, ski trips - it’s a huge thing. |
Yes, I’ve heard that about girls, too. But I’m not sure if it’s really a new thing. I don’t have a sister so I didn’t hear about what went on with girls until I went to college in the second half of the 1970s. I befriended a lot of girls there and was very surprised by how many of them had experimented in this way. |
+1 Go get ready for school, Timmy. |

Depends on your child. Have they hit puberty?
If you kid is boy/girl crazy at this age then more chances they get into it. My son doesn't really chat/text with girls yet. He's into sports and gaming. |
Are their 8th graders who haven't hit puberty??? |
Late bloomers, of course! "Puberty is the time in life when a boy or girl becomes sexually mature. It is a process that usually happens between ages 10 and 14 for girls and ages 12 and 16 for boys. |
Don't know your source, but these windows are late and don't match up with what I see with my kids peers either: "According to the National Institutes of Health, puberty usually begins in girls between 8 and 13 years of age, and in boys between 9 and 14 years of age." |
Simple google searches: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puberty https://www.healthline.com/health/how-early-is-too-early-for-children-to-reach-puberty?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_cmpid=16186720951&utm_adgid=131992823934&utm_adid=581730309498&utm_network=g&utm_device=c&utm_keyword=&utm_adpos=&utm_gclid=EAIaIQobChMImqOy1cC09gIVFUmGCh22ygCqEAMYAiAAEgKP3_D_BwE&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImqOy1cC09gIVFUmGCh22ygCqEAMYAiAAEgKP3_D_BwE#precocious-puberty-explained Maybe those kids need to eat food with less hormones and maybe more organic foods! |
So what is the point? The article agrees with the ages given by the second poster. It says...Recent research suggests that puberty may be happening earlier for both boys and girls. On average, girls will begin puberty around age 11 and boys around age 12. However, it is considered typical for puberty to begin any time between ages 8 and 14. On average, means...by definition...50 percent of kids will start puberty before age 12. You can feed them all the organic food you want, but it's happening. |
+1 I believe every school has Family Life Education: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/family-life-education-fle Sexual Activity Approximately one in six Fairfax County students (17.4%) reported having had sexual intercourse in their lifetime, ranging from 5.0% of eighth-grade students to 33.5% of twelfth-grade students. Male students were more likely to report having had sexual intercourse in their lifetime |
