The fun stoppers are out in full force.

I am sure it was fun, but I would be pissed if I left work early to pick up a kid for a medical appointment and was sitting like a fool in my car for an hour.

Advance notice would have been a basic consideration.

We’re the doors all locked with armed guards?

Absolutely ridiculous for the school to do this without warning to the students or families at the end of the school day right before a holiday break.

No phones and mandatory attendance in order to have a frank discussion and effective learning experience? Totally fine with that.

But you cancel a period of classes during the school day and have a "special assembly" to have this discussion. Chapelle's schedule shouldn't dictate this.

I agree with the OP that this is star worship by the administration at its worst. The kids don't care about Dave - he's not relevant to them.

Everyone upset about this is ridiculous. Ellington is a school for performing arts. They got one of the biggest names out there to come in to talk to the students as a surprise, and students and parents are mad? Talk about a bunch of ungrateful little sh*ts. Back when I was in high school, we would have been thrilled if anything even close to this happened at our school.

So any lgbtq students were required to listen to this bigot?

The school locked all of the kids’ phones so they couldn’t take video, and the assembly was after school ended and for an hour. Parents got an email about it about 10 minutes after it started, but many parents were waiting to pick up their kids and had no idea what was happening. Dave showed up at the end of the school day, making the kids stay an extra hour while they could not text their parents to let them know where they were.
When one girl walked out, he shouted after her that they were better off without her. When kids stood up to him and said that his words were harmful, he berated them.

Regardless of where you stand on Chappelle and the direction his comedy is taking, what on earth was the school thinking to keep kids after without access to contact their parents or without proper notice? And at a school with trans kids, why prioritize their famous alumni vs. the students who are there now? Star worship at its worst.

It's a high school in a city with mass transportation such as buses, subways, trolleys and circulators. Uber, Lyft and taxi rides are easily accessible. And the city has removed hundred of parking and car lanes for the bike riders and scooters. Why are high school parents relying on their parents for pick-up?

Are you really taking OP's post at face value. It seems pretty slanted and I cannot imagine the school preventing a student from leaving to attend an already scheduled appointment. Use your brains people.

So what happens if a student refused to give up their phone?

It's a long ride back to Maryland.

Well since this supposedly started at the end the day, the kid could have just left for the day.

I hope so. Maybe challenge them to show some tolerance.

"Tolerance" doesn't mean what you think it does.

I’m not pp, but you seem to be the one who is confused about the definition of tolerance.

It doesn’t sound like anyone commenting on this thread actually has kids that go to the school. If you did, you would know that he is an alumni of the school. I bet the parents were happy to have him speak.
