Chappelle Visit at Duke Ellington

Anonymous
Dave Chappelle was at Ellington yesterday to talk with the students. It doesn't sound like it went very well.

The school locked all of the kids’ phones so they couldn’t take video, and the assembly was after school ended and for an hour. Parents got an email about it about 10 minutes after it started, but many parents were waiting to pick up their kids and had no idea what was happening. Dave showed up at the end of the school day, making the kids stay an extra hour while they could not text their parents to let them know where they were.
When one girl walked out, he shouted after her that they were better off without her. When kids stood up to him and said that his words were harmful, he berated them.

Regardless of where you stand on Chappelle and the direction his comedy is taking, what on earth was the school thinking to keep kids after without access to contact their parents or without proper notice? And at a school with trans kids, why prioritize their famous alumni vs. the students who are there now? Star worship at its worst.

You keep saying parents had no idea. But they did because you also said they were emailed 10 minutes after it started. If I’m worried about where my kid is, I’m checking texts, emails and phone messages.

All that said, it was a stupid move on the part of the school. I will always love that skit he did with Wayne Brady showing his evil side. It was brilliant. He went too far.

Yikes. That just sounds ridiculous and bad.

This is super weird. Wtf was Ellington thinking?

OP sounds super dramatic. This is why we can't have fun things.

I’ll bet he was hilarious.

I'd be angry that I was picking up my high school kid from school because that would mean that I HAD to be there (some reason pub transportation couldn't be used) and it was holding us up from some appt. I bet it was interesting for sure!

I am sure it was fun, but I would be pissed if I left work early to pick up a kid for a medical appointment and was sitting like a fool in my car for an hour.

Advance notice would have been a basic consideration.

I love Chappell and I would have found it fun, but expecting a bunch of teenagers to care about or even understand his humor is kind of ridiculous, regardless of his alumni status or how much he’s given. He’s a old has-been to them.

Well, they cared about him when the school decided to postpone naming of its theater that was supposed to occur on the very day he still showed up (Nov. 23.) I doubt he walked in and did a stand-up show but I do hope he challenged and engaged the student body on the same level in which there is/was support to cancel him. Good for him.

That's got to be a long ten minutes for the parents standing outside a locked school building wondering where their kids are and why none of them can answer their phones, though.

So were kids banned from leaving the building at the end of the day? I find it hard to believe at 3:30 or whatever that if a kid said ‘ my mom is picking me up for a doctor’s appointment after school’ that the school then snatched the kid’s phone and said you absolutely can’t leave. Something seems off.

I can't find the article but believe he went on the record saying he didn't even want to do it. I'm assuming it was done out of obligation.
