| Oh man even when I was training for a marathon I wasn’t skinny, and I ate really healthy at the time. I’m just never gonna be skinny. Don’t judge. |
Nobody is "demanding" you are skinny on this thread. Just that exercise is an important part of weight equation. |
|
Exercise has been critical to losing, and also maintaining my 50+ lb weightloss.
I don't count calories and don't cut out anything. Probably eat 2,500 calories a day at 43, but I tend to burn about 1k "active" calories a day on top of my BMR. Works for me! |
I am on a phone and struggling with copy and paste! Sorry. Here is a free article that talks about different studies with the same basic conclusion. And again, the study might be wrong, and all bodies are different, but my main point for OP is just that it’s not laziness, its these articles we are reading. https://www.vox.com/2018/1/3/16845438/exercise-weight-loss-myth-burn-calories |
I am the 5'6" 140lbs PP who maintains at 2500. You either eat more than you realize or you literally do not move all day. There is no way you have to only eat 1200 calories to stay in shape. |
So, you didn't "add" calories that you allegedly burned? I think this is the key here. Don't keep adding calories past your BMR and don't add more calories and then work out. |
If you have been at a "maintaining" weight and want to lose, say, 50lbs... you don't need to cut calories. But depending on how much exercise you do, you also may not need to "add" back calories. Obviously if you're been on a gaining momentum you're probably going to need to cut calories. But for me, I largely hovered between 175-185 for a decade -- I didn't need to adjust my calories much as long as I incorporated regular exercise (beyond just walking). When I was losing (while exercising) I consumed (probably, I didn't count) 2k calories/day. I tend to eat more now that I'm "skinnier" because I'm more active, my fitness has improved, and regular exercise increased my metabolism. |

I maintain at about 2,100. I’m 5’5”. 130 lbs, only slightly higher than I’d like to be (125 is my ultimate goal). I gotta be in the right frame of mind to lose weight eating about 1600 calories a day. Most of the time my desire to weigh a little less doesn’t overcome my desire to eat.
I also work out 6 days a week- mostly running but also strength, flexibility, balance, etc. |

Exercise - particularly spinning - makes me so hungry. I eat more than any calories I burned unfortunately
|
Ok. Sure, it might not be a ton over the BMR. But, for those that eat normal amounts of food, I think that exercise is still significant. I meant let's say it is 30% per that article for people that burn bit more than average. For a person that weight 130 lbs, 30 percent of burned calories adds up fast. |
But, you know that? Still, you are building muscles, and muscles burn more calories when you are sedentary anyway. Plus, you get to eat more that day! That's a win for all. |

I'm 49, 5'4 and 115 pounds. I can eat about 2000 calories a day (more or less - not trying to lose , so not going to count!) I exercise moderately (4-5 mile uphill walk on treadmill 5 times a week). I was 150+ pounds a year ago, but I was eating way more junk and sugar than I currently do and not exercising at all - I had to pack on a lot of calories over the years to get to that weight.
I think genetically inherited body chemistry plays a role. DH is obese but doesn't eat that much more than I do. DH's mom and sister are both at a normal weight (not thin), but they eat very little (MIL eats half an English muffin, a few bites of leftovers and a 2 or 3 glasses of wine on any given day and is probably 5'2 and 135) |

No one is saying exercise does't matter.
But it doesn't matter if you "treat yourself" to a iced caramel lardacino after loping on the treadmill for 20 mins and think they equal out. |
This is largely correct - I work at a desk all day, for long hours. I work out for 30-45 mins a day but otherwise there is very little movement. I do try to track everything I eat, but sometimes I eyeball instead of weighing or measuring a portion. 1200 is definitely the lowest I go, and it’s only in the weight loss phase. I can eat more if I’m just maintaining. PP how old are you? |
Not if the purpose of buying my peloton was to lose weight. No, no it’s not. |
