Official Government Shutdown 2023 Thread

You are worried that the government will be funded and operating? Why?

I would LOVE a full year CR. I'd even be okay with a 60day though doing this all again during the holidays would not be awesome. Right now, a 14 day would be kind of a disaster. We'd be back to doing all the same planning in 7 days but now with a new set of deliverables, meetings to ajourn, etc.

It seems like some people don't have to plan for what will happen and don't have the stress leading up to a potential shutdown that others have. I'm sure related to specific job duties.

Please don’t put it those terms. Feds just want to do their jobs, like everyone else. Nothing — and I mean nothing — about this is vacation-like.

You are not working, and getting paid for it. That's about as vacation-like as it gets.

You know it’s not a vacation.

If someone told me I couldn't work, would get paid for the time, and needed to stay home, I'd absolutely consider it a vacation. The fact that you can't spend it at the beach doesn't change that.

Do your vacations usually end at arbitrary times without notice and require you to report to work within four hours?

I would be ok with that! I’d stay home and get caught up on projects around the house. Read a few books, try new recipes, exercise….

But it’s not a vacation.

DP. Fine, don't want to call it a vacation? Call it welfare entitlement. You are being paid not to work.

Unlike my family. My spouse like you will get back pay, except that they are excepted and will have to work for the delayed pay. They don't get to clean the garage, the freezer, or go for a walk in the park, because they will still be working. I am a contractor, so I will be like you, at home and at leisure to do anything within recall of work. Except that you get paid and I don't.

So you are like the welfare recipients. You don't work, but you still get a handout from the federal government.

Your anger is mis-directed. This person would rather work than see the government broken and isn't looking forward to the time off. Not their fault they aren't excepted.

Be mad at Congressional leaders.

So use the time to look for a job that will pay you.

Why would the Biden admin agree to such a huge compromise to a major foreign policy activity?

Maybe this is hard for you to understand, but some of us like our jobs, are invested in what we do, and really resent this needless disruption. So much time wasted this week planning for a possible shutdown. This "vacation" you call it at home will come back to bite later when I'm trying to catch up. The a-hats in Congress behind this are the ones not doing their jobs.

And all my reports are contractors. I am furious that they have this uncertainty and could lose pay. It's ridiculous.

I really don't want them to extend this. Businesses are feeling people not wanting to spend. More of this is not good.

I’d say more likely than not it’ll be open by Tuesday.

Where are you seeing this?

NP but this is not my first rodeo.

I'm honestly fine either way. I enjoy my job and coworkers. I also am tired after doing a lot of fiscal year end stuff and wouldn't mind a short break. I spent this week tying up loose ends so hopefully next week will be chill whether I end up working or not.

I guess people can go months without pay
How fortunate

Our contractors at FBI will be paid. Most govt will be working but restricted on what can be done. It’s such a waste. It’s stressful, demoralizing, frustrating and the work piles up. I feel for those that will suffer economic hardship. This is about Congress failing to do their jobs. Be mad at them not federal employees.

I think it is time for OLC to revisit the opinion it issued in 1981 that an agency must cease operations during a lapse in appropriations.

Or Congress needs to amend the Antideficiency Act to avoid this ridiculous ritual. Or just pass legislation guaranteeing an automatic CR until Congress passes a budget. We look weak and dysfunctional to our enemies. There is a solution, they just choose not to do it.

Not OP. Because then in 10 days we are doing this all over again and wasting days upon days doing shutdown prep again, ad naseum. So maybe it would just better to have wasted the days this week to do all this crap, have them shut down and figure it out rather than doing it every 10 days with 14 day CRs going forward.

Agreed. Either a long CR like the Senate is working on or shut down and pass the year long appropriations.

DP. Jeepers. We are in a similar situation as you and your spouse but your anger is really misplaced. Our supposed leaders are letting us down yet again.
