The tin-foil hat levels of paranoia and conspiracy theories on this thread are impressive. |
This chain sounds like BS trolling to me. Nobody has THAT much time on their hands. Who cares who is posting here? |
Not worse than the Maret folks, who apparently are convinced than there is an organized smear campaign against them. (They are the ones who are actually organized!) |
There is enough general outrage that it looks organized. Nope, just everyone who doesn’t have a connection to Maret thinks it’s outrageous! |
McKenna destroys Maret again. Love it.

It’s about equity and justice for Hardy families, not just for the select privileged elite few. |
Fantastic. |
But, but, but . . I thought this wasn't about Hardy? Isn't it aboout the Boys and Girls club? |
But, but, but there a lot of different people posting on this thread. I have neither a kid at Hardy nor a child the goes to Jellef after school. FWIW, I think sticking a bunch of kids in a basement and hot giving them access to the field is far worse than having Hardy having access. See, everybody gets an opinion. |
The Maret spend is over nine years so it's only $100K per year. Peanuts. |
The city owns the lands, which it bought for over $15m in 2008. It immediately gave the land to Maret in 2009 for $2.5m in capital investments in exchange for a 10 year lease of the prime time hours after school. So basically Maret paid $250K per year to rent the land, which was a waaaaaaaay below market price. And now? Maret will “rent” the land for only $900K in capital improvements over the course of the next 9 years. Meanwhile, the value of the land is certainly worth way more than the $15m paid by the city back in 2008. Basically, Maret is borrowing $15m of city money at a very, very low interest rate while controlling what happens to the land and who gets to use it. Nice racket, if you can get it. But it’s the epitome of the “private sector” mooching from the government thru corruption. |
DPR controls permitting. Not Maret. So 32 weeks of the year, anyone can use the field through DPR permitting during the 2 hour afternoon time. And 52 weeks a year, people can request DPR permits during the other usable hours at Jelleff. |
If Maret had sat down with Hardy and the B&GC in August and worked out something along the lines of which is being proposed above, it wouldn't have satisfied everyone but the issue would have slowly but surely gone away. The WaPo articles wouldn't have happened and there may not have even been yesterday's hearing. Maret's crisis PR team fouled this up rather badly. |
One way to resolve this is for DPR to issue an RFP request and figure out the fair market value of the afternoon time slots. It will like be a multiple of the $100K/year Maret is slated to pay in capital improvements.
Maret could then pay the fair market amount or take its balls and go back to Cathedral Ave NW. |
*2 hours, or until their game ends, whichever is later, during the same prime times and seasons that a other school-based team needs field space. (the “the only 2 hours” argument is BS and is getting really old.) |
