Isn't her legal name Rachel Markle? Megan is her middle name. That's not really cosplaying.

The point is her legal name is not actually Sussex as was claimed in a huge moment on the show.

She didn't make any claim about her legal name, she just stated that she identifies as "Sussex" not Markle. And then provided an explanation as to why. The fact that some of you are flipping out about this says much more about you than her.

I don't even think it was a "huge moment" on the show. It was a very brief conversation. YOU have made it a huge moment because for some reason it's very important to you that Meghan be forced to use her maiden name forever even if she doesn't want to, which is deranged.

But it's not her maiden name, lol. It's her current legal name, and the name of her kids as well. They have "Markle" on their birth certificate. At no point did she ever change their name to Sussex, which would be very bizarre considering it's no one's legal name in the family.

It is definitively her maiden name. Some women keep their maiden name. It sounds like Meghan does not want to keep hers but that there may be an issue with what she changes it to because the naming conventions in her husband's family are weird.

But I don't think it would be "bizarre" in that situation to simply legally change everyone's last name to Sussex.

This is actually a relatable problem to me because I had issues with my name when I got married and it was also hard to get people to call me by my new name (hyphenated) because people are stubborn and weird. The whole thing winds up being political and annoying when, hello, it's my name and you should call me what I tell you my name is. I did ultimately change my name legally but it took a while and in the meantime, I 100% expected people to call me by my newly adopted name, not my maiden name. So I'm totally on Meghan's side here. It is not some "gotcha" that her chosen name may not be her legal name. That's paperwork. Call people what they ask to be called or GTFO.

In any case, it is her current name, and the current name of her children. There is no legal precedent for her to change her name to Sussex. Of course she could, in the same way I could march down to the courthouse and change mine to Sussex. But it would be pretty bizarre of both myself and MM to do that considering it's not our legal name in any sense.

No, it would be normal for the Duchess of Sussex to change her and her kid's legal US names to Sussex as a way to simplify their names. People often make choices like this when navigating marital name conflicts or immigration naming issues.

It would be totally deranged for you to do so, as you are not the Duchess of Sussex.

I think this is why you are so mad, actually.

Considering that Sussex is NOT a last name and the name of a geographical area, yes it would be pretty deranged. But yeah, maybe everyone should just change their name to it and we can all have a good laugh.

The point is Meghan herself claimed that her name is Sussex. But ahe apparently does not use the name legally? It is very weird. I am going to change my name to "Princess Diana" but not legally. It will just be the name I declare for myself.

The difference here is that Meghan legally owns a title, the Duchess of Sussex, and many other people who have had the titles Duke of and Duchess of have used the house name as their surname, so Meghan does as well. Whereas you are not a Princess and your name is not Diana. So what Meghan is doing is normal and in keeping with the traditions of her husband's family, whereas you calling yourself Princess Diana would be psychotic.

And again, I think that's what bothers you. Meghan is actually entitled to style herself as Meghan Sussex because she is, in fact, the Duchess of Sussex. Just as other members of that family have done for years. But you aren't entitled to do so because you aren't a Duchess. This obviously makes you very, very mad for some reason.

OK I understand being entitled to use a name. I am married and could use my husband's name, but my legal name is still my maiden name. I do nor go around correcting people and saying my husband's name is my actual name. The reason I don't do that is his name is not my actual, legal name.

So the point remains that "Sussex" is not her legal name according to any documents. Her legal name is "Markle." So she lied about her name being Sussex. The point of lying was to have a "gotcha" moment with Mindy Kaling.

The fact that this poster is still on here. The rest of us come and go but she has been here since at least 7:30 screaming about Meghan using Sussex as a last name and when people didn't engage the way she wanted she resorted to calling individual posters fat/ugly/stupid and then threatening to get DCUM itself brigaded.

The rest of you "come and go"? Babe youve been on here since 7:30 am screeching and arguing. And probably for several days/weeks before today. Stop capping.

Interesting people are hating on the way she is dressed. I didn't like her outfit with Mindy Kaling bc it tried too hard, but I really like her style generally. I don't think she is trying to be on trend or hip at all and I appreciate that. She's not much of a cook or tv hostess, but she to me looks truly beautiful.

Anonymous wrote:It’s just weird for her to be showcasing how to cook and host on a show when she isn’t an expert in either. She has zero background in either field and likely didn’t host or cook beyond basics prior to marrying Harry. Even since then, she mostly hires out and does very little of it herself. So I just don’t get why this got made into a show.

Again, this was basically the concept behind the Tig, a website she ran for three years prior to marrying Harry. She is an amateur but, like Gwyneth, she had good taste and was known in her friend circles for being good at this kind of thing.

I actually have no idea if she "mostly hires out" now or not. When they show her cooking on the show, she looks to me like someone who cooks at home. Also when her actual friends appear on the show, you can tell that they appreciate this aspect of her personality, that she's hosted them many times and they appreciate the extra mile she goes as a hostess. So to me it seems like this is a genuine interest of hers, that she has some skill and background in it, and she is sharing real tips and tricks from things she has done before.

Is it much more impressive than what your best hostess girlfriend might do at her house or put up on her Pinterest? No. I know women who do stuff like this and they are as skilled as Meghan is. But she's famous and they aren't, she has a Netflix deal and they don't. It's the same with Goop -- is she the only person who could possibly have created that website? No, there are lots of women with similar tastes and interests who could have produces something similar. But she's famous and rich so she had a built in audience and other women don't.

Some of you are watching this show like you are totally unfamiliar with the concept of an already-famous person parlaying their fame into a lifestyle brand. It's not that uncommon! You've seen this before.

She's not famous though. She was not famous pre-Harry and she was only a UK royal for a tiny amount of time.

Not before marrying Harry. Most didn't know who she was, just some white actress.

You thought she was white? Interesting. I’d say she looks visibly non-white or at least not fully white. Not to be racist. Just she objectively is not 100% white.

Everyone i know, including some black women, thought she was white at first.

That’s…really weird that you were going up to random Black women you know to ask what race they thought Meghan Markle was.

She was not considered black in Hwood nor did she identify as black She probably would’ve been more famous had she leaned into the black side earlier . Black media loves biracials. I am going to take a guess and assume she didn’t get along with most bw. I could see Oprahs head snap into two during the interview. It just seems like she complains about the smallest things like a surname or her kids titles or not getting to wear the Dress she wanted. Claiming the royals were racist did not endear her to the black audience like she expected. She received much backlash for her complaints and Oprah immediately distanced herself from the interview. Barack and Michelle O had a really good relationship with the Queen/BRF and Meghan and Michelle tellingly do not seem to really socialize despite both living in LA and having some sort of deals with Netflix.

The bolded is flatly untrue — her character on Suits was identifiably black and the character’s dad played by a well-known black actor.

Michelle Obama is not friends with every black celeb in LA, omg.

The Obamas stayed far away from the Sussexes after they trashed the royal family.

Anonymous wrote:Did anyone else find Meghan’s aesthetic incredibly dated? Maybe because I spend time on TikTok and gen Zs are always making fun of millennial beige and the kind of twee “bundles of flowers in mason jars” look that was big in the 2010s. But I just kept thinking the whole thing was such a blast from the past- from the overly curated, instagram perfect styling to the empty platitudes about “we all can come together with love” or “wine night!”… it really seemed like something straight out of 2016. As a fellow millennial close in age to Meghan it was actually kind of depressing

The beige thing goes way back to her influence by Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, who died in a plane crash with JFk Jr in 1998. Bessette Kennedy was known for wearing Calvin Klein inspired outfits in beige and black Her style was very influential . There are photos of Meghan doing exact copies of the outfits.

Sure, but "sad beige" is also a trend, or has been throughout the 2010s before Gen Zs started clowning on it. https://www.today.com/parents/family/sad-beige-rcna65116

It has been a hallmark of elder millennial style, the pared down, all white/brown/beige monochromatic thing, matching the similar all white/brown/beige kitchen. And what once seemed kind of chic, new and fresh, now looks incredibly dated and like a throwback to the mid 2010s, which was Meghan's heyday. Anyone who stays on top of trends knows that this kind of thing looks very out of date now and Gen Zs are always making fun of these stylistic choices. And for good reason- once you kind of pan out you realize how kind of ridiculous and overly stylized/ self conscious it often looks.

I don't personally think her style is dated. It reads more quiet luxury than sad beige.

With that being said, as a fellow millennial, I can appreciate Meghan sticking to her style rather than changing. As you get older you kind of learn what works for you and gain confidence to avoid overhauling your style every time trends change. She's in ankle jeans and a button down, it's not like she's in a J. Crew bubble necklace or something extremely dated.

I also do think this is one of those areas where she would never win and if she tried something excessively trendy she'd be made fun of for trying too hard.

It is very dated though, and you being a millennial may blind you to that fact since it's a style you still enjoy. In the way that plenty of boomers will still walk around thinking their outfits from the 80s or 90s are really cool, when it dates them and gives away their "era".

Nothing wrong with having a personal style. But you can still update things, keep them fresh, and move with the times- or hire people to style you if you cant figure it out yourself. ESPECIALLY if youre going to position yourself as some kind of leader in the aspirational lifestyle industry. Most people dont want to be walking around wearing a style that is a good decade or so passe.

Please give detailed examples of how to “update” and “freshen” the aesthetic of the show. I would love to hear what is considered updated.

The show to me reads as blandly pleasant. It’s the entire curated concept of a lifestyle show that seems dated more so than the details like clothing.

Seriously. I don't understand how straight cut jeans and a button down are "dated." She just dresses like a normal rich mom, which she is. It's millennial because millennials are moms now.

LOL. That's because you are a millennial! Dont you get that? In the same way a boomer isnt going to understand how their look is dated either. There are plenty of hip looking rich moms, not everyone is wearing what was en vogue in 2015.

OK, but I see Gen Z in the Metro wearing pants cuts and sweater styles that my mom wore in 1985. It absolutely floors me. It legitimately looks like they took one of my mom's outfits from the Sears Cheryl Tiegs catalogue.

I'm sure our resident Stacy London here will have an explanation shortly about how that's chic but Meghan's Cartier watch screams nouveau riche and millennial or some shit, idk.

Stacy London? Damn. Talk about dated references... you must be over 40.

DP Are you experiencing a midlife crisis? What is with the hyper fixation on things being dated?

I missed the memo where you can't even make an older reference lol.

I'm not, but you appear to be going through one whenever anyone points out (rightfully) that your clothing and references are dated. What's wrong with that? You're allowed to proudly walk around in your millennial page and have everyone able to pin your age, in the same way a 65 year old woman can waltz around in their QVC comfort sweatshirt and not be surprised that people pin her for being a grandma. You speak and dress with a very distinctive time/era/middle aged vibe. What's the issue?

I think there is a lot more than a comfort sweatshirt that would pin someone as a grandma.

You’re hilariously fixated on this. Are you one of those people who actually reads those ads that tell you things like stop carrying around a bag at a certain age and takes them to heart?

No, just someone who has a bare minimum ability to observe fashion trends and generational tendencies. That's why it's so amusing watching you crash out- you really thought there was nothing dated about your skinny jeans and ballet boots, and cannot stand to have someone point out that your style is passe now. Are you one of those people who genuinely believed that they could pass for ten years younger?

Writing all this and accusing someone else of crashing out is insaneeeeeeeee

It's the truth! Y'all wouldn't be going on and on and on and trying to defend yourselves and arguing that chambray is still cool for pages if you werent crashing out. That's what a crash out is, my love.

No one has argued that chambray was cool! You are the only one mentioning chambray shirts!

Yes someone was mad about chambray shirts being brought up, lol. I'm sure they thought they looked *very* hip and avant garde in their chambray

It matters where you are too. Chambray is preppy, timeless California casual.

it's really not. Chambray is super dated, especially in the styles that were popular for millennials.

Jeans and button downs have been around forever. They are classic and there’s nothing wrong with that. Not everyone feels the need to be dressed on the cusp of fashion every day. You’re ridiculous.

But if you insist, you can find a chambray button down at The Row right now for $1350.00.

Yeah, but the particular millenial chambray with skinny jeans look is extremely dated, not classic anymore. And there's nothing wrong with that, but that's how it goes. I'm sorry you thought you looked cool in this outfit https://www.tiktok.com/@sideofsequins/video/7345621987793833258

I’m a gen x minimalist who doesn’t own a classic button down RL type shirt and never has. They don’t look good on me and my style isn’t preppy. But you know what I LOVE about being older? Your insults don’t bother me and I find your obsession and behavior shallow and vapid. Hope you find some happiness today.

DP. Thank you for defending the chambray! Obviously it can be styled to look more modern, and despite what PP said, no one on here claimed that a chambray shirt with skinny jeans/leggings was the height of current fashion. She makes stuff up. Nutty.

I'm sorry you are so very wrong. Here is Debretts, the British experts on etiquette and convention within the British aristocracy, on the matter:

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex can, and do, use the ‘surname’ Sussex. This is in line with the time when Prince Harry used Wales as his surname whilst serving in the army, to reflect that he was the son of the (then) Prince of Wales. Now that he is the Duke of Sussex, his wife and children can, and do, use Sussex as a surname."

https://debretts.com/royal-family/the-royal-family/the-royal-surname/

Meghan and Harry are part of the British royal family who do not, traditionally, even have last names. However in recent centuries they have created surnames from house names -- Windsor and Mountbatten are both house names that were styled as the surname "Mountbatten-Windsor" for family members, for instance. Windsor is not technically a last name either, but the name of a place, just like Sussex. And yet it is a surname used by family members for some time now.

Harry and his brother both used Wales as a surname in school and in the military. Williams kids now you Wales as their surname at school. Sophie has used the name Essex as a surname since she was Duchess of Essex, and is still sometimes referred to as Sophie Essex in the press even though technically she is now the Duchess of Edinborough.

The names on Meghan's American drivers license or her kids American birth certificates is pretty irrelevant -- literally no one cares but you. Both her kids were christened with the last name Mountbatten-Windsor, but in keeping with other members of the royal family in similar situations, they choose not to use it as a family name, likely because it's so formal and long. Sussex is succinct and makes sense so that's what their family uses.

They *can* use it, but it is not their legal name, and correcting a well meaning person who accurately used her name and instructing her to call her by something else enitrely is very weird behavior.

Of course the name on her birth certificate and her kids' birth certificate matter- are you insane? This is exactly why so many people dont take MM supporters seriously. Do you even hear yourself?

Do you hear YOURself? They can and do use it. Meghan has not gone by Markle for 7 years, since she got married. Which includes the entire time she has known Mindy. Meghan does not introduce herself that way. She does not refer to herself or her kids that way. It might still be a name on her birth certificate and some of her kid's documents might have that name on it for legal reasons because they live in the US, but she has never, not even once, referred to them as Markle and she stopped referring to herself that way when she got married.

And yet you think it's normal and find for someone to apply a name to her that she hasn't used in 7 years, a name that is at this point ONLY used by tabloid media, and that Meghan should be required to simply ignore it and accept it and not (politely!) correct her friend by explaining that she uses a different surname now and kindly provide the explanation that it is important to her to share a family name with her husband and kids?

But okay, I'm insane. Whatever.

Meghan HAS gone by Markle and STILL DOES!!! It's literally her legal name! It's also the legal name of her kids... if she had wanted to go by Sussex or had been actively going by Sussex, she would have given them that last name at birth. Maybe she didnt because if she did that while living in Britain while still ensconced in the RF they would have laughed her out of town!

That is her name, whether she likes it or not. She has no claim to Sussex more than any other random person.

No, you aren't getting it.

Meghan does not refer to herself as Markle and hasn't since she got married.

The problem in the US is that technically the family she married into doesn't have real surnames, and also in the UK they are allowed to just use the adopted surnames of the royals. So when they moved back to the US, a lot of her documents still say Markle and her kids' docs say Markle because (1) Harry doesn't even have a proper surname, and (2) the US government does not observe "Windsor-Mountbatten" or "Sussex" as a surname, whereas they do observe Markle as one.

This is a paperwork problem that is related to immigration and marrying someone from a culture with a different naming convention. I know people from Spain who have run into this issue because in Spain you can have three last names and in the US you can't and it can be hard to deal with this.

But no, Meghan does not "use" Markle as her last name. She doesn't tell people her last name is Markle, she does not refer to her kids as Markles, and never has. She married a guy without a regular last name so she's been stuck with Markle in various settings. They are likely trying to decide/figure out if they are going to formally change the names to Sussex in the US, or change them to Windsor-Mountbatten and just use Sussex, or what. Or maybe for immigration reasons they'll keep Markle on official US paperwork but simply go by Sussex. All of these are fine. None of them mean that it is acceptable to insist her or her kids names are Markle when she has expressly stated that she wants to share her husband's name and for her kids to share it too, and when it's common on his family for people to use the name of the house in their tile as a surname.

Who cares?

I think that Meghan attracts defenders because they sincerely believe that people criticizing her are racist or envy her marriage. I don’t get that, I myself am mixed race, and I find her husband repugnant.

I posted the Tina Brown review from her substack and some fired up stan immediately screamed that Brown always criticized MM. But that’s not true. She wrote many, many times about how MM represented a fresh perspective and how she breathed life into a dreary irrelevant institution. She was one of the most elite of her fans - she was EIC of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. So - I mean, that just not true, and it speaks to the I don’t know what the best phrasing is, irrationality, dishonesty, immaturity, anger, of her fans here. It’s just not necessary. The link is actual show discussion, and the raves against MM’s “attackers” is not actually about the show.

I don’t like MM and have always seen her as mean and two-faced, starting from her Oprah interview. It’s a legitimate view, as is Brown’s take. It makes sense that the prerecorded “season 2” episode was lopped off in order to have something to push her jam whenever it’s released. We’ll see if Netflix makes them another massive money deal.
