FCPS HS Boundary

Anonymous
It isn’t just the border we do need people to pick food and work in factories.
I don’t care if there are kids in my children’s school who don’t speak English. I care if there are gang fights or kids throwing punches. I also care that my kid goes to the same school for all four years of high school. We can apply to TJ or go to the aap center for middle school but I think FCPS is killing itself on this.
There will be a rise in private schools in the area and more MC and UMC flight from public schools. FCPS isn’t in a position currently to take on this level of instability.

We’ll all see soon enough.

We used to live right by Lewis. I loved the area. I didn’t care about lots of immigrants. Dh and I are children of immigrants. The gang activity is what made us move.

Changing the school boundary will likely make others move or switch to private.

Lack of English skills is what tanks the schools test scores and ranking.

Oh stop I’m a child of an immigrant and I teach immigrants and that is NOT the issue in learning if your kid is in a school with immigrant kids. It is about gang violence and safety. Having grown up outside of Baltimore and worked in Montgomery county I know what comes next for FCPS. I’ve seen it happen many a time. There will be a rise of catholic and private schools. If you are smart you will
start one in the area. Maybe that is Kyle’s next business venture.

That is the problem. Gang violence isn't the problem in fcps elementary schools. Or even most middle schools.

I will add that what has saved FCPS from UMC flight is its aap program and keeping pockets of poverty isolated and allowing transfers out of schools that are severely impacted. They are removing those programs and now will be feeling the effects of UMC flight.

VA is not MD. Fairfax County is more likely to go the way of Prince William County and enforce occupancy violations to solve the problem. That was how MoCo saw an influx into the county and schools years ago... Prince William tightening up their code enforcement

AAP centers see the same issues because they also have non-AAP kids there. It's just a bit more insulated in the classrooms for the AAP kids.

My kid was in the AAP program at Springfield estates. Elementary level is fine. We have friends who are still in the area now and considering moving with kids in middle school.

How does this help? Those kids need to live somewhere.

But the promise of getting your kid into aap or a school being able to say (indirectly or directly) “we ARE serving your kid, they aren’t ready for extra.” Plays into the minds of parents and helps them feel they have somethjng to strive for. It has kept much parents in.

VA orMD not parents will do what is best for their kids. There will be flight from schools. The board is new and dumb and haven’t figured out this will be a downfall for years to come.

Of course the AAP classes are fine. They're not in the AAP classes.

In the case of formerly Prince William County kids they moved to MD and lived there.
