FCPS HS Boundary

It's situations like this that will get more UMC northern Virginians onboard with school vouchers. Glenn Youngkin /Republicans just need to pitch it properly. People are unhappy.

Exactly- I am wondering if Kyle was a republican plant in the Democratic Party.

But the promise of getting your kid into aap or a school being able to say (indirectly or directly) “we ARE serving your kid, they aren’t ready for extra.” Plays into the minds of parents and helps them feel they have somethjng to strive for. It has kept much parents in.

VA orMD not parents will do what is best for their kids. There will be flight from schools. The board is new and dumb and haven’t figured out this will be a downfall for years to come.

The board is not dumb. There is no perfect solution to this complicated problem and no decision will make everyone happy.

Who knows but they need some counterbalance on the board

Sorry but this board is green and dumb and clearly doesn’t understand what nice white and upper middle class parents actually want. Just look at what they are doing. They don’t understand the actual consequences of what they are doing.

I don’t care if there are kids in my children’s school who don’t speak English. I care if there are gang fights or kids throwing punches. I also care that my kid goes to the same school for all four years of high school. We can apply to TJ or go to the aap center for middle school but I think FCPS is killing itself on this.
There will be a rise in private schools in the area and more MC and UMC flight from public schools. FCPS isn’t in a position currently to take on this level of instability.

We used to live right by Lewis. I loved the area. I didn’t care about lots of immigrants. Dh and I are children of immigrants. The gang activity is what made us move.

Changing the school boundary will likely make others move or switch to private.

Lack of English skills is what tanks the schools test scores and ranking.

Oh stop I’m a child of an immigrant and I teach immigrants and that is NOT the issue in learning if your kid is in a school with immigrant kids. It is about gang violence and safety. Having grown up outside of Baltimore and worked in Montgomery county I know what comes next for FCPS. I’ve seen it happen many a time. There will be a rise of catholic and private schools. If you are smart you will
start one in the area. Maybe that is Kyle’s next business venture.

That is the problem. Gang violence isn't the problem in fcps elementary schools. Or even most middle schools.

My kid was in the AAP program at Springfield estates. Elementary level is fine. We have friends who are still in the area now and considering moving with kids in middle school.

Of course the AAP classes are fine. They're not in the AAP classes.

I’m not sure who you are referring to as they. There were many black and brown people in AAP at Springfield Estates. There were many African immigrant children and children of African American military in addition to Asian immigrants.

The parents’ education background is everything. I have noticed that children who are new English learners who have educated parents always pick up English and excel. Educated African immigrants with both mother and father supporting child perform well, the same way as an immigrant from Korea or China does well.

Guessing you are not the “not everything is about race” poster 🙄

Go ahead, write your to, make your noise… denial and anger come before acceptance.

Or, just stfu and MOVE since you’ve got it like that. Go insulate yourself from the browns and the poors and be done with it.

The board is starting with updating this policy - 8130. https://go.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/files/97KJK54D54F8/$file/P8130.pdf

This line should terrify everyone, considering they are talking about expedited boundary changes.

"For administrative boundary adjustments or expedited boundary study adjustments
affecting the assignment of less than fifteen percent of the pupils in average daily
membership in the affected school, no public hearing shall be required."

No Public Hearing??? That's awful.

A Public hearing for what? To delay the process and listen to crybaby parents threaten to leave, sue, etc?

We elected the SB reps to make these sorts of decisions. They are doing this because they HAVE TO, not because they want to.

You are clearly not understanding the issue. I’m not insulated from “blacks and browns” I want my kids insulated from gangs and violence. My kids go to a majority minority school. The thing is we have to move out of the county as apparently no place is safe here. When we bought, we thought we were buying a majority minority well performing pyramid. Now no one knows where that may be.
The board will just redistrict in secret when they want. So if you live across west Springfield high school but Lewis is closer to you than they are currently bussing kids, they could just plop you in Lewis. Who knows which neighborhoods to even buy into. That is why the board is dumb

No they don’t HAVE to. In Aps parents have to resubmit residency every few years. FCPS
Doesn’t. They could stop transfers or eliminate magnets. They’re not.
Anonymous
They will never stop transfers. Parents would revolt
Anonymous
You can't have bad schools AND no way for UMC parents to transfer out.
