We know that based on April 22 local and federal response to the Burke shooting. Laying blame for the lack of action at Uvalde on racism strikes me as facile given that many of the responding officers were themselves Latino.

The answer *is not* whether or not doors function properly. The answer *IS NOT* fortifying schools. Those answers basically give in to the mentally deranged criminals and take away our safety and wellbeing.

The RIGHT answer is to make sure that criminals and nutjobs are not allowed to obtain guns.

So the lock on the outer door did not work. The locks on the classroom doors can only be locked from outside the classrooms. Fortifying a position is used to slow and funnel people to areas. If people who are guarding fail to show up or take action all the fortifications are useless. This is what happen here. Just like it happen to the French in WW2. Police failed and conservatives failed.

The Texas law enforcement report already said that the Uvalde shooter would've been easily able to shoot out the window next to the door and open the door from the outside, if the door had not malfunctioned. He had already fired at the building multiple times. He was single-mindedly determined to get inside.

Every door at my child’s elementary school either has a window next to it, or a window in the door.. Exterior doors, classroom doors, cafeteria, gym, they’re all the same. Locks aren't going to stop someone with an AR-15 and a determination to get inside.

I don’t know how they’re continuing with life in these small towns where they must see the victims’ families every time they go to the grocery store or church or whatever. I also think pointing out that the punisher phone cop was receiving info that his wife was shot makes him look better than he did before we knew that’s why he was on his phone.

The shooter had multiple semiautomatic rifles — all purchased legally in Virginia, although subsequently converted to automatic — sniper scopes and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. It was live-streamed to the internet. For reasons still not known, he stopped shooting after firing more than 200 rounds. Miraculously only two people were seriously injured.

I doubt you have ever received a call from a distraught child who wanted nothing more than to tell you how much they loved their parents and didn’t want to die. So spare us the banal drama and histrionics.

It’s exhausting that people don’t understand basic civics. The Supreme Court is hell-bent on gutting any meaningful regulation of firearms since Heller. The remedy is a constitutional amendment, not a full majority, whatever that may mean.

This is the first thing I can recall learning about the Uvalde story that didn’t make me irate. I tried to think of another way to phrase it. I started to say it’s the first positive thing, but my god look what he’s been through. It doesn’t make me happy, because I’ve seen how much hurt he has in interviews. Then I considered saying it was the fist that didn’t make me sad, but I was crying and they’re not tears of joy. After, what, 2 months, some news that doesn’t make me irate from this situation.
