In the video when the killer comes in the door you watch it close and you hear it lock/. Sorry I don’t buy the narrative that it wasn’t propped open. That teacher certainly holds blame for this tragedy!
Investigators have confirmed that there is security video showing that the door was closed after the teacher returned to the building.
If it was a self locking door then how did the shooter get in?
Are we really doing this again Ted Cruz? It malfunctioned.
The answer *is not* whether or not doors function properly. The answer *IS NOT* fortifying schools. Those answers basically give in to the mentally deranged criminals and take away our safety and wellbeing. The RIGHT answer is to make sure that criminals and nutjobs are not allowed to obtain guns.
So the lock on the outer door did not work. The locks on the classroom doors can only be locked from outside the classrooms. Fortifying a position is used to slow and funnel people to areas. If people who are guarding fail to show up or take action all the fortifications are useless. This is what happen here. Just like it happen to the French in WW2. Police failed and conservatives failed.
The Texas law enforcement report already said that the Uvalde shooter would've been easily able to shoot out the window next to the door and open the door from the outside, if the door had not malfunctioned. He had already fired at the building multiple times. He was single-mindedly determined to get inside.
This. Every door at my child’s elementary school either has a window next to it, or a window in the door.. Exterior doors, classroom doors, cafeteria, gym, they’re all the same. Locks aren't going to stop someone with an AR-15 and a determination to get inside. It’s the guns.
+1 But the unlocked classroom door kept 19 law enforcement officers from going in and doing their jobs.
Agree with the PPP. The question of locked doors is entirely the wrong one to even be having. By shifting the conversation to fortifying schools we've already conceded defeat to the AR-15 wielding wackos, we are already down to defining which of the handful of places in our childrens lives we are going to bother fortifying and defending - - rather than trying to make sure that lunatics can't so easily get those AR-15s in the first place, making the WHOLE COUNTRY a safer place for our kids. I refuse to make that concession. It's the guns.
You’re years late to what passes for the policy discussion. America began fortifying classrooms in earnest in the wake of Sandy Hook. (We already had active shooter drills) There was an opportunity to pass meaningful gun control legislation at the time, including reviving the assault weapons ban, but our Congress was bought and paid for and the Murdochs were busy telling the god-and-guns fanatics that Obama’s black helicopters were coming for their shotguns.
Never too late to fix this. We need to regain a full majority.
It’s exhausting that people don’t understand basic civics. The Supreme Court is hell-bent on gutting any meaningful regulation of firearms since Heller. The remedy is a constitutional amendment, not a full majority, whatever that may mean.
