Government Shutdown - September, 2025 Editiion

Regarding the five items, ignoring the fact that it's a massive security risk to compile all aspects of what people are working on, on an unsecure government system.... Ignore that even things that are unclassified on their own could be combined with other bits of information to form a picture that we don't want out in the public domain....

So ignoring all that... Government employees sent their five items to a mailbox that eventually filled up and couldn't actually receive all the messages. So it was never a valid task to begin with. No one did anything with the messages or even bothered to read them.

That's another huge difference between the parties -

Democrats respect, value and support federal workers,
Republicans demonize, attack and vilify federal workers.

agreed

and that is why I always vote Red.

i worked as government contractor at GSA and Pentagon. you could fire 50% of the employess and the offices would NOT skip a beat.

and everyone claimed they were so so busy, and yet they left at 3:30 every day. and still found time to work out/ play bball every day.

they left at 3:30 because they got in at 7. WTF is wrong with you? Stop being intellectually dishonest.

Right, they arrive at 7am and do exactly nothing until 9am when people actually start sending and answering emails.

You think that’s all that the government does, don’t you. Send and answer emails? You sound like a toddler.

The five bullet points emails were *incredibly* wasteful in my agency. Not because of the couple minutes a week spent writing the emails--people quickly realized that no one was reading them and it was OK to send the same/similar things every week. The emails weren't relaying anything new to managers, but writing them wasn't a big deal for most people.

The issue was that managing the five bullet emails process took up a *huge* amount of managerial time. The directive to write the emails came from OPM and DOGE, outside of the normal chain of command. Agencies themselves didn't control the requirements, nor did they control the supposed punishments for non-compliance. Agency leadership was terrified that the administration would somehow use any type of non-compliance as an end-around to make cuts without consulting leadership or considering the agency's mission. So, the agency opted to do everything they could to ensure that there was absolutely no non-compliance. Managers had to track down anyone who didn't send their email early enough, account for anyone who was on leave of any type, then report up the chain certifying that everyone had complied in a timely manner. It effectively created a whole new bureaucracy all its own. Meanwhile, the people who supposedly actually wanted this information (OPM) weren't even reading the emails. It was a complete waste of time and resources.

Yep. There is zero political pressure to get anything done. And now that the military is getting paid, that removes another pressure point.

It's basically up to the Air Traffic Controllers. When they decide to check out from their high pressure jobs because they need to do something else to pay the mortgage, it's over.

So basically, we are all waiting for Air Traffic Controllers to break for Congress to do their damn job.

Totally awesome political system we have here.

I assume that Vought will likely shift money around for ATC and this thing will be going until January at the earliest.

God I miss the Nancy Pelosi days. She knew how to handle him.

Since Trump is using the government shut down to target democrat leaning agencies I sure do wish we could just keep the shutdown going and target registered republicans who work in the government thr next time a shut down happens and democrats are in power.

That amount of money will get the military (the troops/enlisted only btw. Not the civilian employees or contractors) through one more paycheck. Then we’re right back where we started.

And when they were asked to come up with five items they did every week they threw a fit. That is literally something most private sector workers are expected to do without even being asked. If my boss sat me down, and asked me what I completed over the last week (with no warning or time to prepare), I suspect he would be pretty damn disappointed if I could only list five items over the 40 hours of work I put in. It’s basic shit like that which makes it damn hard to have any compassion for these government workers.

Working for the government should be a great honor. Staff should be proud of the work they have done to help the American people. They should not have to even be asked to provide a list of what they did in the last week, they should be excited to share how they helped the American people. And it should be obvious anyway.

It’s stuff like this that makes the vast majority of Americans feel like there needs to be a reckoning, that those who are just in government for a paycheck, who aren’t proud of the job they have, who don’t want to be held accountable, to go and be replaced by people who do. People who aren’t happy to sit at home with their thumbs up their asses when the democrats shut down the government, and who insist on coming into work to support the American people regardless of what their supervisors say, and regardless of whether they will ever be paid for their work.

The issue with the bullet points was that the request was coming from an external email and not even anyone officially appointed to government to be fed into a generative AI program. And then when feds raised concerns over this (because we have had the duty to protect government information drilled into this) we were threatened and accused of being lazy. Also it wasn’t just five bullets. We had to cc our supervisor. It was basically building a giant org chart of every federal agency on an unsecured server in the OPM building.

But you wouldn’t know anything about this because you watch too much Fox News and can’t grasp beyond the surface level. It’s laughable that this many months later there is anyone out there who believes this was about making sure feds were working.

How can Trump fly to Israel and do all these celebrations if the government is shut down? Who is paying these bills?

It's like Trump shut everyone else down but he's spending money left and right and getting all this free publicity.

There are all kinds of these issues. Why do medicaid and social security continue to be paid? Why do veterans get their pensions but active duty military doesn't get paid?

Funding is incredibly complicated and obtuse.

Yes but he's getting all these accolades in the media and all this free press and the big question is WHO IS PAYING FOR IT if the government is supposed to be shutdown??? How is this not fascism?
