DC Public and Public Charter Schools
Everyone I know there dislikes it. Bad administration, bad test scores, bad middle school. |
This isn’t funny given the current climate with school shootings |
Our son was originally around #5 on the wait list last year and he got in at the end of July. If you look at the wait list info for previous years, they definitely let in more kids for PK of the wait list in previous years. I initially attributed that to pandemic crazy, but it's possible that trend will continue into this year in which case you'd have a chance. Be mentally prepared for getting bumped down the wait list though as siblings get jumped to the top of the list. Our kiddo went from 5 to something like 12 and then I think he was back up to 3 or 4 in myschooldc when he got the offer. It's interesting that your wait list # at DCB is so high. I We've had both Cap City and DCB on our lottery lists for PK3 (two different kids) for the past few years and they were both much higher on the DCB list in relation to their wait list number at Cap City. So either DCB has gotten a lot more popular in the past 2-3 years or Capital City less so. |
Do you have more details. We are looking at prek3 so more concerned about teaching quality than test scores and middle school. But administration is important. |
I remember a year or two ago there was a big kerfuffle because the principal made a student write something on the chalkboard a bunch of times (like old school punishment style) for taking extra food from lunch. This is all hearsay and maybe not true but the vibe I get is that it's very old school disciplinarian. We are much happier at our kumbaya socioemotive style school (Langley). |
Not really. I think the preschool teaching is good. |

It’s a roller coaster. Some great teachers in dual language, some not so great. Nonexistent leadership. Toxic culture, with a few parents dominating the dialogue to suit their agendas. Things have broken down to a point that we’re planning to leave ASAP. School not on track to reopen in term 4. Beware. Seaton seems to be a much better community with a great leader, but I understand the desire for spanish. |

Even the immersion program isn't very good, based on families we know. |
Third grade at Janney is also a bubble class. Despite a bunch of kids leaving the third grade this school year, it's still much larger than any other cohort at the school. After all of the meetings that have been held with parents over the years regarding the size of this grade I can't imagine they will take any OOB students. |
As much as I'd love to join a longer-term community, I'm a diplomat and travel overseas for work. I was trying to explain my rationale for ranking schools since I am sure for families that don't want to keep switching schools, academics become more and more important as the kids get older. For pre-k, I'm looking for basics (with as much Spanish as possible), outdoor play, and a safe and happy kid. |
| Lottery Virgin here- does your waitlist number update in the myschool site on its own? |
Yes. |
