1 Seaton Elementary School Waitlisted - #12
2 Cleveland Elementary School (Dual Language) - English Dominant Waitlisted - #14
3 Garrison Elementary School Waitlisted - #30
4 E.W. Stokes - Brookland (Spanish Language Program) Waitlisted - #49
5 Mundo Verde Bilingual PCS - J.F. Cook Campus Waitlisted - #51

Any guesses? We're IB for Langley which we're happy with so the stakes feel low to me, but I probably would prefer one of these schools if we got in.

Some chance at Seaton and Garrison. Unclear to me why you want Cleveland. Stokes no chance. Some chance at Cook.

Cleveland is extremely convenient, location-wise, and I liked the Spanish immersion element. Didn't put non-immersion on my list at all though because people I know there aren't very happy with it.

What's wrong with Cleveland? DH works just a few blocks away and we have a good waitlist #for the regular program. We currently are matched at a charter a few blocks southeast.

Everyone I know there dislikes it. Bad administration, bad test scores, bad middle school.

Anonymous wrote:Number 12 at Oyster — remind me, in a pandemic it is merely negligent homicide to pick off 11 people in front of us, right? Usual mandate of mens rea is set aside due to diminished capacity, no? (I know, I know, I have to say I am joking because no one understands tone online.)

11 justifiable acts still leaves you outside looking in. Commit.

You are thinking too narrowly. You can also eliminate current/returning students as well. Why limit your murderous rampage to just those in the lottery queue?

This isn’t funny given the current climate with school shootings

DC Bilingual: #215

Lamb: #324 (any chance? lol)

Cap City: #9 (seriously, chances here?)

El Haynes: #54

Sela: matched!

Happy with Sela and ranked it quite high, but we'll def be watching Cap City closely to see if the waitlist moves. We read it doesn't move very often, but I guess it depends on the year.

Our son was originally around #5 on the wait list last year and he got in at the end of July. If you look at the wait list info for previous years, they definitely let in more kids for PK of the wait list in previous years. I initially attributed that to pandemic crazy, but it's possible that trend will continue into this year in which case you'd have a chance. Be mentally prepared for getting bumped down the wait list though as siblings get jumped to the top of the list. Our kiddo went from 5 to something like 12 and then I think he was back up to 3 or 4 in myschooldc when he got the offer.

It's interesting that your wait list # at DCB is so high. I We've had both Cap City and DCB on our lottery lists for PK3 (two different kids) for the past few years and they were both much higher on the DCB list in relation to their wait list number at Cap City. So either DCB has gotten a lot more popular in the past 2-3 years or Capital City less so.

Do you have more details. We are looking at prek3 so more concerned about teaching quality than test scores and middle school. But administration is important.

I remember a year or two ago there was a big kerfuffle because the principal made a student write something on the chalkboard a bunch of times (like old school punishment style) for taking extra food from lunch. This is all hearsay and maybe not true but the vibe I get is that it's very old school disciplinarian. We are much happier at our kumbaya socioemotive style school (Langley).

Not really. I think the preschool teaching is good.

It’s a roller coaster. Some great teachers in dual language, some not so great. Nonexistent leadership. Toxic culture, with a few parents dominating the dialogue to suit their agendas. Things have broken down to a point that we’re planning to leave ASAP. School not on track to reopen in term 4. Beware. Seaton seems to be a much better community with a great leader, but I understand the desire for spanish.

Anonymous wrote:PK3 mom here and this all super new to me. We are moving to DC this summer and planned to rent near whatever school worked out. My priorities were Spanish for Pre-K and a school near Spanish daycare for my younger daughter, or somewhere both could attend together. We may not live in DC forever so I was less concerned about K-5.

Lotto results anticlimactic because I ranked Bethune 16th St first and matched. I think that's good news? We liked the Spanish and location. Trying to connect with other parents there to learn more. Nearby daycare could be Mana or Estrellitas. Also would love to do free Pre-K at Estrellitas -- on waitlist.

We have spots at Communikids in Cathedral Heights (daycare for younger and "free" pre-k for older -- lots of extra costs for food and before/aftercare, but they have been operating during pandemic). Any thoughts on whether Communikids would be better, or Bethune+daycare?

Thanks!

Even the immersion program isn't very good, based on families we know.

WL #3 or below for Lafayette, Janney, Shepherd, Hearst, Murch.

Was not expecting this - currently at a charter.

Chances at Murch are zero. The current third grade class is big and my kids class has had two new students enroll in March.

Third grade at Janney is also a bubble class. Despite a bunch of kids leaving the third grade this school year, it's still much larger than any other cohort at the school. After all of the meetings that have been held with parents over the years regarding the size of this grade I can't imagine they will take any OOB students.

As much as I'd love to join a longer-term community, I'm a diplomat and travel overseas for work. I was trying to explain my rationale for ranking schools since I am sure for families that don't want to keep switching schools, academics become more and more important as the kids get older. For pre-k, I'm looking for basics (with as much Spanish as possible), outdoor play, and a safe and happy kid.
