Why can't the PM do the ceremonial stuff in addition to the politics? That's what the POTUS does.

This is an incredible take. The "tradition" and "history" of the British Royal family includes the largest empire on earth, the invention of an entire Christian denomination, the rise of our own country, the first written constitution in the Magna Carta, etc.

Only the UK can decide if they want the Royal family to remain as it is or substantially as it is, but its history is significant not only in the UK, but in the development of the modern world.

You say “the largest empire on Earth” like it’s a good thing. It’s not.

Obviously the show is fictitious. But the executive producer/head writer has been very public about how much research goes into it to make it as close to accurate as possible. Only royal apologists think there is no truth or reality to any of it. QEII is the most down to earth woman in the world without a snobbish thought in her head. Charles treated Diana with love and affection and there was no reason for her to hate the royal family. That's what you think right PP?

I'm not the PP, but this is interesting to learn - I was wondering how much was "real."

I am enjoying this season, but I am a little conflicted. As someone else said, they were 10 when a lot of these events happened in their life. Same with me. So this portrayal is definitely cementing in my mind that this was what things were like. And many of the people portrayed are still with us. I'm not all worked up about it or anything, but it's in the back of my mind. Like, was Charles really carrying on with Camilla the whole time he was married? Was Diana as kind of dim as she is portrayed. I think you do forget that Diana was so young.

Margaret Thatcher is fascinating. I don't know what mental disorder she had, but damn, she is messed up.

It's their fault that Diana didn't know what to do and it's also their fault that Thatcher doesn't know what clothing to bring. How would she know they were going out traipsing around in the mud?
Bob

I agree. They were so jealous of Diana. Charles needed to keep it in his pants + Camilla needed to pay attention to her own family + husband. They acted like rich white trash.

Any confirmation whether that was planned or just happened?

We're not comfortable watching shows with a lot of sex, so how much of that is there in The Crown?

Seriously? There is zero nudity.

np you forgot about Philip's bum!

I 100% agree. They have given her a much older and grandmotherly look than Philip.

Rubbish. She is supposed to be in her 60s.

Rubbish right back. Then they should have aged Philip a lot more. The actor who played Lord Mountbatten looked far more appropriate, age wise, than the Philip actor.

NP. Disagree with this. Some people carry old for their age and others young. Madonna is 62, would that be better casting? I think the show does a good job.

Madonna, who’s had much plastic surgery and personal trainers? Uh, no - might as well give Cher the job. Absurd comparison. Phillip looks a good ten years younger than Olivia Coleman in this show.

You don’t know them and you didn’t know Diana.

Charles and Camilla have now been married longer than he was married to Diana. Get over it.

+1
In their own ways, they were as trapped as she was.

Except they are living happily together and she died horrifically aged 36 leaving two young sons behind. I think its the reality that people have trouble reconciling, not the actual tv fiction.

True, she died and they are still living - but are you implying that’s somehow their fault? The paparazzi killed her. Period.

DP. But you can’t really give props to Camilla and Charles when Diana is dead. No way to know how things would have turned out.

Not giving “props” to anyone involved - but certainly not condemning anyone, either. Charles always wanted to marry Camilla but was not allowed to.

It was definitely planned. The episode where that guy broke into the queens room, he was telling her what was right in front of her face- a beautiful castle but it was in decay. The mouse helped show that several episodes earlier.

Someone please fill in the missing piece for me. Why didn't Charles and Camilla get married in the first place? Did the royal family keep them apart, and if so, why?

Because everyone in Royal circles knew that Camilla was a ho.

The Queen and Lord Mountbatten (Charles’s uncle) required him to marry a virgin. Just one of the ways that the Crown was operating a few decades behind the times.

Wasn’t she already married to someone else?

No

1968-1970: Camilla on-and-off dates Major Andrew Parker-Bowles
1970: Camilla and APB break up. APB begins dating Princess Anne (Charles’ sister)
Mid 1971: Camilla and Prince Charles formally meet. They begin casually dating.
Early 1973: Prince Charles goes overseas for extended military service. Prince Charles makes no commitment to Camilla before he leaves.
Spring 1973: Camilla and APB get back together, announce their engagement.

The events of 1973 are not very clear. The Earl Mountbatten was sort of acting as a marriage consultant for the Royal family, giving Charles advice and vetting the suitability of the young women hanging around Charles. It is rumored that Lord Mountbatten - as a very senior military official - had Charles sent away on extended overseas duty in 1973 to get him away from Camilla. He also apparently strongly encouraged the marriage between Camilla and APB.

Crazy, wasn’t it! I can’t figure out why they’d do it on purpose or why they’d leave it in if it was an accident.

I think that because I remember the events of season four, it wasn’t as enjoyable for me as the earlier seasons.

Trying to make Charles and the avalanche suspenseful was ridiculous since we all know he’s still alive.
