One recently posted about a second grader who is learning nothing...complaining it is stuff he learned in kindergarten. My son was reading in K. I will bet there are plenty of elementary school students at a standstill because of DL.

Another bit of intel I got lately is I rant into my neighbor who is a 4th grade teacher. She said there are kids in her class who are pre-readers. Imagine your advanced kid in a class with pre-readers. What a mess.

It would be the same in person too. Very little differentiation in those grades.

When my son was in K, he was reading above grade level. There were several groups of readers...below, at, and above. They accommodated them all. Sounds like it is more challenging with DL.

In my parochial, reading and math groups are split up. My daughter is in advanced math and reading. She is in a cohort of other advanced math and reading students. It is a cohort of 9. There is also one DL learner in that cohort. These kids have not lost any ground since the pandemic hit.

I wouldn't assume too much. I've emailed a bit with several new parents from MCPS who enrolled their children at our private this fall and they sound exactly like this.

Faker.

Since you’ve never experienced this, how would you know?

This.

^And I responded that we HAD been in private, thus the opinion I offered. Read the thread!

Given that everyone posts anonymously, it's difficult to figure out who is who on this board.

To our HOS - thanks for an expensive 8 weeks of DL. You should have just opened like you SAID you would so your school would have at least been a better option than the publics.

You need to read the letter from MCPS and MCEA again. It specifically says this doesn't mean anyone is going back in November. And on top of that, the union president said that when kids start going back, it will be small numbers of special needs kids and there are absolutely no plans to bring back the general population yet.

"Friday’s notification will begin formal conversations and bargaining, and will focus on the possibility of bringing small groups of the school district’s highest-needs students back, according to union President Chris Lloyd. The school district is not yet considering bringing all students back into buildings for a hybrid of in-person and remote classes, Lloyd said."

If you pull your kids out of private, they will be doing MCPS DL full time until at least February, and possibly the rest of the school year.

+100 I suspect most will be DL through June. And any in person return will be minimal...hybrid at most.

Definitely not a faker but very clueless response by you.

I love how we former MCPS parents are stereotyped in this thread. Gotta love it.

So you referenced one person bad experience and ignored all those who are happy with MCPS DL and called DL a joke?
What are you doing that's different from the OP?
I have seen many posts where people are not happy with privates DL, even in this thread. Should I called them a joke?

You can do whatever you like. I am just saying that in general, private school DL is far superior to public school DL.

No, it is not. You must be zoned for a really bad public school. We left public in a ‘W‘ zone for private this year and the DL is about equal. I will say that the public school kids seem smarter and quicker than the private school kids in my DC’s class. Although the private school classes are smaller, sometimes it just means that kids who aren’t terribly smart are able to participate in discussions more and talk for longer periods of time Without anyone to tell them to be quiet. This is nota good thing. Also our public school PTA was far more active, helpful and busy than the prI ate school we are in. We will finish out this year but plan on returning to MCPS once everything is back to normal. That said, if you are zoned for ‘W’ schools, really think hard about going private - the advantages are really dependent upon what school you are zoned for.

This is not true at all. Private DL varies by teacher just like in-person. Public DL has improved since the tech issues in the spring.

Anonymous wrote:Here's what's gonna happen:

In about 45 days, kids with special needs and ELL students and perhaps very young students like Kindergarteners will be allowed to go back hybrid. 6th and 9th graders may get to go in in small groups once or twice to do a face to face activity and see their school.

Elementary kids could get to go back in for a little bit before February, maaaaaaaybe.

MS and HS won't be called back in until February at a minimum, because their age puts them at minimally greater risk and their social behaviors and independence make them less able to be controlled, and they behave in a riskier way.

Sometime in Spring 2021, or probably February, all students will be offered the option to do hybrid (something like 2 days per week, with the other two synchronous....or if we're really unlucky, asynchronous). At that point, about half the student population will return, and the other half will stay virtual through most of the year or all of the year. There will be more battles about an inequity shift where virtual students suffer and in-person students consume the most resources.

50/50 that the hybrid/in-person model will never happen this year due to Americans being f*c*(#&$& idiots and not wearing masks during socializing indoors in the winter, or that the schools open but have to close again and we're back to square one.

In no scenario do all students go back 100% this academic year.

Then it'll be long enough doing this that the academic week will substantially transform due to people getting used to virtual and some liking it, and/or we'll lose teachers, and/or budgets will be so severely cut they'll want some people to stay home. There will be a push for more virtual options or perhaps 4-day school weeks.

Mark. My. Words.

(FWIW, I don't foresee it being smart to go back any time soon, with the exception of students with exceptional need.)

And yet, my kids' private has been back in-person for over a month now. Enjoy MCPS!
