Am I hearing this correctly, there were parents of freshmen lobbying to get their sons on the varsity team??

It’s now still an elite academic school in the greater DC area but it’s lacrosse program has fallen significantly.

The only way I see it getting back to the proud program it once was is if the headmaster and BOT get behind it.

Agreed. I don't know why STA parents/supporters would think you can't have both...strong athletics and strong academics. STA has some strong sports (maybe not top of the league, but in the top half); why accept less for lacrosse, football, hoops etc??

As it relates to lacrosse, darn near every IAC lacrosse program has kids committed to Ivy League schools, which last time I checked, was arguably the top conference in collegiate lacrosse. I would think all of those kids could have easily considered STA if the program showed half an effort to actually want to build a program. But hey....keep using the whole academic superiority angle as cover for an overall lack of commitment by the school to athletics...

Of course you can have both but what makes you think lax should be the priority for admissions? There are other sports teams and other interests at STA that all want to bring in students in their sport or interest. STA is more diverse than it used to be and more diverse than and smaller than some of the other schools in the IAC and they can’t fill yo their grades will lax bros. That does not create a diverse grade. Sorry. Baseball, soccer, crew, hockey, tennis, basketball all want strong players not to mention the theater program and music and art program.

Despite hockey recruiting and a number of Tier 1 players, STA finished 9th in the MAPHL and missed the playoffs. Landon has a Brown commit for hockey, you can have both strong academics and athletics.

As for the parents lobbying, did the coaches listen to them? What an entitled group.

They didn't need to lobby. The returning players weren't very good. This is an overall program choice and strategy.

STA looses both games this week. 7-10 loss to Severn and 5-12 loss to Dematha.

I'll admit I'm a Dematha Homer. But I was surprised that after it became clear that our FOGO owned the other guy I was surprised that the opposition did not make any modifications. The saint albans defense had some fast athletes but athleticism did not make up for a gap in communication between each of the defenders. A pretty easy coaching fix. As for the offense it was pretty clear there was one supposed stud attackman and one supposed attack middle and they tried to do it all despite the fact that the Stags had a clear bead on both of them. Certainly understand the frustration of the players in trying to do this. Again yet another thing the coaches could/should have addressed.

I don't mean to attack the coach. He's a new HC and I know has a good reputation in the club scene. I also am not saying that a more experienced coach could have changed the result. The Stags were just the better team. Period. My point is that even a good new coach can't turn things around immediately. He has a learning curve as well. The prior posters who saw this new coach as a savior will have to wait for awhile longer.

Does STA have a dedicated FOGO? If so, is he a club player?

I think the FCA FOGO is now playing at Brown.

This is what happens when your team is made up of ego-centric 14 year olds with no experience in varsity lacrosse. Maybe they will get it together by the time they're juniors, but by then, the whole program will probably be so demoralized that they will move on to yet another coach.

Is STA’s JV the only JV in our area with Juniors on the team?

One of the only schools.

Is that how you feel about Bullis too? After all, they have more freshman on their varsity squad than STA.

I don’t think it’s fair to attack the kids. Whether it’s the STA administration’s fault for lack of recruiting or developing from within or the coaching carousel, those kids are simply trying to take advantage of an opportunity that has presented itself.

That's interesting. Only 2 2022's on the roster for Bullis and 8 2023's. Maybe the strength of the 2021's discouraged 2022 applications.
