Harvard Rescinds Admission for Parkland Student Over ‘Offensive’ Comments

In Florida a 14 year old can be tried and sentenced as an adult for many felonies, and a 16 year old in Florida is considered an adult for all felonies. So a 14 year old who commits murder can be tried and sentenced to life in prison without parole in Florida. Yet, somehow we should be concerned that Harvard revoked an admission based on a 16 year old expressing racist and hateful views, and conservatives who broadly support putting a 14 year old in prison for life are upset that there is no forgiveness for a racist, hateful 16 year old.

A thousand times yes. This is what we mean by privilege and entitlement: why should my horrible actions ruin my chances at an easy life?

Yes - exactly this. Exactly exactly this.

+1 It's hard to get into Harvard. They don't need to bend over backwards to accommodate a kid without the moral compass to recognize that using racial epithets and talking about killing jews is wrong.

Where does he end up? Odds are Hillsdale, yea? Or do his right wing / NRA / think tank connections come through and get him into Princeton or Duke?

Princeton and Duke aren't going to try to take this kid. Maybe he can get an internship with David Duke.

Where does it say that he threatened violence? I would not defend that. But, yes, racist speech is free speech and educational institutions that supposedly value the free exchange of ideas should protect it.

Here's the posts where he talks about killing the Jews. It boggles my mind that people are feeling so sorry for this kid. There are a million more deserving kids out there than this one, hopefully he'll take this as a lesson to improve his character.

The girl that killed her mom ended up at Tufts.

I have no problem with a school taking him now that they know what they are getting.

You're grossly underestimating right wing connections and you're a prisoner of the moment. Disgraced EPA hack Scott Pruitt got his Big 12 bimbo sorority daughter a prestigious White House internship and into No. 8 UVA Law School off connections. This Kyle kid is far more connected than Pruitt's daughter. This will blow over and he'll quietly be at an elite college in the fall of 2020. Mark my words.

I can bet you that Harvard took him because Trump, his cronies and NRA, asked Harvard to take him. They wanted to distract/pressurize/contain activists like David Hogg who was given admission by Harvard. This student was taken by Harvard not based on his superior academic record (because he proves he is not really very smart by his actions), but because Harvard has produced some truly evil and horrible students who are currently in the administration and have deep pockets. Besides, Harvard usually likes to hedge its bet and plays both sides of the aisle - mainly because Harvard emerges a winner regardless of who comes out as the winner at the moment.

Dig deep into this student's record. You will find that he is quite mediocre and really not "Harvard-worthy". I think the real scandal is there...

I don’t know that it’s as much of a scandal as that, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he was more of a token diversity admit than someone who truly got in on his own merits.

He is a White Male. What diversity are you talking about? Do you know the composition of Harvard students?

He's a conservative high profile NRA hugger. That's pretty rare among Harvard students, so that gives him a big hook so that Harvard can't be accused of being that liberal. Unfortunately this conservative happens to have a fondness for throwing around anti-semitic, violent and racist language.

Free speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences.

+1 You can spew racist, stupid, violent **** all you want. The first amendment guarantees that right. No amendment guarantees you admission to Harvard.

+1 Consequences for thee, but not for me.

All of those weeping for this kid should read the above. No one is guaranteed admission to Harvard. He'll be ok.

When white males have to deal with life on the same terms as everyone else.

Harvard is private, they can do what they want. Just like those cake bakers. Thoughts and prayers.

"Yes but any white right wing boy could have written the same thing! Should they all not get into Harvard just for being white right wing boys? Think of who you were at 16, if you were a white right wing boy."

Ralph Northam dressed in blackface as an adult and he is still governor.

That tells you everything you need to know about how the rules are applied in our society.

One was elected and can decide whether to resign or not, another was admitted to a college and has no control over the process. So it tells you nothing other than people in VA, inlcluding black people, prefer a D who dressed in blackface years ago over a current Trump-publican.
