Huh, TIL having schools be walkable is segregation with whiffs of white supremacy. Fascinating! |
It’s a meaningless gesture at best. An expensive meaningless gesture. |
|
Didn't they teach logic in some PP's schools? Cleansing history does not equate to glorifying idiots via naming public institutions after them.
They aren not the same thing |
You are way behind if you don’t understand that walkable is code. |
They taught us math. If you spend your money here, you no longer have it to spend there. They also taught us the meaning of the word hypocrisy. As in - don’t kick out one of the few historically back PU’s zoned to your school and then want a cookie for changing a name. What’s in a name? Nothing. It means nothing, because we don’t live our values. |
Whine Whine Whine |
Dude, one of the issues is that "historically black" neighborhood isn't really that way any longer. It's been gentrified, and while it's more diverse than many of the PU's that made the cut, it's hardly the worst thing they could've done in terms of diversity. Not the best, but not the worst either. They should still change the name. But maybe they can find different W-L people so that it's not as pricey a change. They can still be the "Generals," because who cares about whether the mascot makes sense. |
Dude, it’s a constant chip chip chip. I get that that people are embarrassed by the name. It’s just that they have so many other things to be more embarrassed about. |
Don't tell PP, but it's code in every f-ing school district in the country. Arlington is hardly the only place "segregated" by social economic status. It's amazing, but other places have "good neighborhoods" and "bad neighborhoods" where houses have different values. Shockingly, race also tends to correlate with different average levels of socio-economic stratus in just about every area of the country. And don't forget: don't call Asians minorities because they act as whites in these discussions. |
No one has said it’s specific to Arlington. Far from. You just get a special sanctimonious smugness to go along with the liberalism. It’s arlington’s own special sauce. |
Not only that, did you know that most North Arlington neighborhoods had racial covenants (until they were outlawed) that ensured local neighborhoods and schools would remain segregated? Or did you think it was just a coincidence that NA looks like it does? Yes, walkable schools are appealing to everyone but there's no denying that in Arlington County that demand also leverages a history of racist exclusion in North Arlington and one of concentrated poverty in South Arlington. |
Do you mean George Washington Carver? |
Cool. Do you want poors with low test scores in your kid’s school? Didnt think so. |
Yes, I do. And because I believe in integration, that means not only do I want a mix of kids them in my south Arlington elementary, I also want a mix in your north Arlington elementary. |
Spare us your sanctimonious bullshit. |
